Seminar on Corporate Governance Reforms
On September 19, 2025, Sankei Shimbun Co. will host a seminar titled "Reflecting on the Last Decade of Corporate Governance Reforms, Corporate Value Enhancement, and Board Structures". This event will take place at the Otemachi Financial City Conference Center and will also be accessible online. The seminar intends to gather participants to explore critical aspects of corporate governance and its evolution in Japan.
Corporate governance has been a focal point in Japan's growth strategy for the last decade, especially following the establishment of the Corporate Governance Code in 2015 and amendments to company law that introduced new governance mechanisms. This seminar will delve into the current state of Japanese companies while addressing institutional challenges related to company law, the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, and the corporate governance code. Key stakeholders, including board members, executive management, investors, and shareholders, will share their perspectives in a frank discussion about governance practices.

- - Opening Remarks and Keynote Speech (15:00 - 15:10): Katsuhiko Tomiyama, Chairman of the Japan Corporate Governance Association, will discuss challenges faced in corporate governance during the era of capital democracy.
- - Lecture 1 (15:10 - 15:30): Tetsuro Tomita from Keidanren will present on promoting governance to achieve sustainable corporate value enhancement.
- - Lecture 2 (15:30 - 15:50): Takashi Saruta will review the effects of past measures aimed at capital markets and the emerging challenges visible in the current landscape.
- - Lecture 3 (15:50 - 16:10): Hiroshi Ota from Nishimura & Asahi will discuss the outlook for institutional design within listed companies in Japan.
- - Panel Discussion (16:15 - 17:15): A panel including prominent figures from various sectors will explore what is necessary for achieving long-term sustainable corporate value through capital democracy.
The panel will be led by Toshi Taniwa from Mitsui Chemicals, featuring panelists from notable firms and government bodies. A keynote presentation by the Financial Services Agency's Akihito Konagaya will provide insights into the agency's initiatives regarding corporate governance reforms.
