Virginia Advocate Patrick Gee Receives Prestigious NKF Award
The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) has recently announced that Patrick Gee, a distinguished healthcare consultant from Virginia and the founder of iAdvocate, has been selected as the recipient of the Celeste Lee Patient Engagement Award. This significant recognition is scheduled to be presented at the NKF Spring Clinical Meetings taking place in Boston from April 9 to 13, 2025.
Significance of the Celeste Lee Award
This award was established in memory of Celeste Castillo Lee, a passionate advocate for patient-centered care and empowerment. It represents the highest commendation given by NKF to honor patients who not only thrive despite kidney-related challenges but also embody the foundational principles of patient advocacy promoted by the organization. Gee's selection reflects his steadfast commitment to putting patients at the forefront of healthcare initiatives.
A Voice for the Voiceless
Dr. Patrick Gee expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, “This award is a profound honor that resonates deeply with my commitment to health equity and patient advocacy.” He emphasized Celeste Castillo Lee’s enduring legacy, describing it as a guiding light for advocates striving to amplify patients' voices in the healthcare field. Her relentless efforts to incorporate patients' lived experiences into clinical research and healthcare decision-making are inspirational and set a high standard for advocacy.
Patrick Gee is not only celebrated for his professional accomplishments but also for his remarkable personal journey. With a background in criminal justice and a PhD in Justice, Law, and Criminology, he has accumulated a wealth of experience and accolades over the years. He has received numerous recognitions for his volunteer work, including the Virginia Department of Corrections Volunteerism and Community Outreach Award and the NABCJ Owen Bell Award for Chapter Development.
Despite personal health obstacles, including a battle with Stage 3b End-Stage Kidney Disease and subsequent surgeries following a kidney transplant, Patrick's resolve and dedication to advocacy remain unshaken. He coined the phrase, “I am the Voice for the Voiceless and the Face for the Faceless in the fight against kidney disease,” highlighting his unwavering commitment to championing health equity and advocating for those who often lack representation.
Impact on Kidney Health
Dr. Kirk Campbell, NKF's president, remarked on Gee's exemplary contributions and the profound impact his work has on the community. “This award is a reflection of Dr. Gee's unwavering commitment to advancing kidney health. His relentless passion for improving patient care ensures that every voice is heard and that access to necessary care remains a priority for all,” he said.
Through his role as a healthcare consultant and professional patient activist, Patrick has made tremendous strides in promoting health awareness in underserved communities. He also founded iAdvocate, Inc., a nonprofit organization aimed at enhancing health and wellness among populations at risk of kidney disease.
The Larger Picture of Kidney Disease in America
In the broader context, kidney disease affects over 35 million adults in the United States. Alarmingly, around 90% of those afflicted remain unaware of their condition. Risk factors associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) include diabetes, hypertension, and family history. Statistics indicate that Black or African American individuals are approximately four times as likely to suffer from kidney failure compared to their White counterparts, showcasing a crucial area of focus for advocates like Gee.
