New Mural Unveiling in Old Town Fairfax Promotes Local Identity and Artistry

New Mural Unveiling in Old Town Fairfax: 'Fox in the Flowers'

On July 10, 2025, Fairfax City Economic Development (FCED) will unveil a new public art mural titled "Fox in the Flowers," located at 10407 Main Street in Old Town Fairfax. The unveiling will take place during a ceremonial ribbon-cutting event at 2 p.m.

This exciting initiative is the brainchild of Richmond-based illustrator Bailey Sullivan, whose artwork is celebrated for its bold designs that incorporate floral elements. The mural aims to breathe life and vibrancy into Old Town Fairfax, enhancing the area's charm and character.

The mural features elements inspired by local flora native to the region, such as crepe myrtles and dogwoods. At its center, the mural showcases the Fairfax Fox, a figure that serves as an emblem of the city, symbolizing its rich history and welcoming nature. The playful depiction of the fox embodies the city's spirit and aims to resonate with both residents and visitors.

Bailey Sullivan expressed her excitement about the project, stating, "My work is inspired by decorative European folk art, rich with florals and nature. For this mural, I drew inspiration from the fable of the fox and the crow. It’s an honor to contribute to the beautiful Old Town Fairfax, and I hope this artwork brings a spark of joy to everyone who sees it."

The mural is not only an artistic addition to the downtown area but also a testament to Fairfax's dedication to creative placemaking and tourism. According to Tina Disch, executive director of the Old Town Fairfax Business Association, this mural represents a transformation of the downtown area into a welcoming, walkable destination where art, history, and community converge.

Christopher Bruno, CEO of FCED, emphasized the significance of public art in enhancing the visitor experience. "This mural is just the beginning of our efforts toward a broader tourism initiative. It's an investment that shapes how people will engage with Old Town, influencing why they visit and explore our community."

The mural project is a collaborative effort between FCED, the City of Fairfax Cultural Arts, and the Commission on the Arts. This partnership aligns with the city’s goals for placemaking and tourism development. By investing in such creative projects, Fairfax City not only enriches its arts scene but also fosters a deeper appreciation for local culture.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the new mural at 10407 Main Street and to explore other artistic installations throughout Old Town Fairfax. For further details on this and other public art efforts in the city, individuals can visit gofairfaxcity.com/walkingmap/artwork.
