Shanghai Electric Showcases Innovative Energy Solutions at WFES 2026
On January 15, 2026,
Shanghai Electric made a significant appearance at the
World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2026 held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center. This summit served as a crucial platform for leading industry players and government policy makers to explore challenges in energy transformation and to promote sustainable energy solutions.
Shanghai Electric unveiled its comprehensive energy solutions encompassing solar energy, desalination, hybrid energy storage, hydrogen energy, and green fuels. Their commitment to supporting the Middle East in establishing a resilient, intelligent, and sustainable energy ecosystem was clearly demonstrated throughout the summit.
In a region rich in oil and gas resources yet facing critical water scarcity, the path to energy transformation poses significant challenges. As one of the biggest and most impactful renewable energy events in the Middle East and North Africa, WFES gathers influential policy makers, leading industry representatives, and tech innovators to tackle energy transition challenges head-on.
Zhu Weiwen, Deputy Director of Marketing at Shanghai Electric Power Generation Group, stated, “Energy transformation is not merely a combination of individual technologies; it's a systemic project.” Shanghai Electric aims to operate as a system integrator, understanding that the extensive deployment of renewable resources, grid stability, green fuel production, and industrial decarbonization are interconnected goals. This holistic approach enables Shanghai Electric to provide actionable pathways to transformation for customers in the Middle East.
The Shanghai Electric exhibit was designed as an immersive experience, showcasing four integrated solution zones that illustrated the entire energy value chain—ranging from production and storage to conversion and efficient utilization. In the integrated solar and water energy zone, notable projects included the solar park in Dubai, demonstrating the complementary integration of concentrated solar power, photovoltaic energy, and energy storage for around-the-clock electricity supply. This zone also highlighted Shanghai Electric’s expertise in seawater desalination, showcasing technologies like Multi-Effect Distillation (MED) and membrane reverse osmosis (RO).
The network support and hybrid storage zone focused on grid stability while maximizing the share of renewables. Here, Shanghai Electric highlighted its energy storage solutions featuring flywheels and synchronous condensers that provide essential inertia support and rapid frequency regulation. These innovative solutions have been implemented in various projects, including the Peñasco photovoltaic plant in Mexico.
Another critical feature was the hydrogen energy and excess electricity conversion zone, where Shanghai Electric showcased its Bristack® electrolyzers, boasting the industry’s lowest energy consumption of 3.94 kWh/Nm³. They also presented a demonstration project for green methanol in Tchaonan, Jilin Province, China, marking the first large-scale green methanol demonstration project. This initiative integrates hydrogen produced from wind energy with biomass-based green methanol production technology, having received international sustainability and carbon footprint certification from the EU.
Moreover, the carbon-neutral industrial park zone illustrated pathways for high-energy-consuming industrial parks to achieve low-carbon transformation through the synergy of highly efficient industrial turbines and smart energy management systems, enabling efficiency improvements at the system level and intelligent dispatching.
Every solution showcased at Shanghai Electric's booth is backed by proven projects, including the 2 GW Al Sadawi photovoltaic project in Saudi Arabia, the Safi seawater desalination project in Morocco, the Pančevo gas power plant in Serbia, and the green methanol project in Tchaonan, China. These projects across different countries and application scenarios underscore Shanghai Electric’s capacity to deliver complex, integrated energy systems regionally.
On the first day of the summit, Shanghai Electric organized several technical promotional campaigns focusing on key regional themes such as energy desalination integration, green fuels, and grid stability, which attracted significant interest from industry participants.
Being a trusted partner in energy systems, Shanghai Electric continues to aid the Middle East and global markets in transforming rich natural resources into sustainable, reliable, and green energy for the future. For more information, visit
