Collaboration of Idemitsu Kosan, T2, and Isuzu for Carbon Neutral Trucking with Biofuels

Pioneering a Green Future in Truck Transportation



In a significant move towards achieving carbon neutrality in the trucking sector, three prominent companies in Japan — Idemitsu Kosan, T2, and Isuzu — have announced their collaboration to promote the use of next-generation biodiesel fuel. This initiative aligns with Japan's broader goal of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and it aims at tapping into the potential of biodiesel as a sustainable fuel alternative.

Idemitsu Kosan, headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, will supply its innovative biodiesel fuel known as Idemitsu Renewable Diesel (IRD) to T2, also based in Chiyoda-ku. Beginning this summer, T2 will incorporate IRD into its operational trials using autonomous trucks that are currently undergoing commercial operations on the approximately 500-kilometer expressway route between Kanto and Kansai. This initiative is an important step in validating the use of biodiesel within the trucking logistics framework.

Furthermore, Isuzu, headquartered in Yokohama, Kanagawa, will provide maintenance and repair services for T2's autonomous trucks utilizing IRD, ensuring comparable service levels to those using conventional diesel fuel. This collaboration sets the stage for a robust testing ground that can pave the way for wider adoption of biodiesel in the future.

Addressing Challenges in Biodiesel Adoption


Despite the expected benefits of IRD, the current landscape of biodiesel adoption faces several hurdles. One of the major challenges is the limited availability of refueling stations for biodiesel, which remains relatively more expensive compared to traditional fuels. Additionally, uncertainties exist regarding the performance and durability of trucks running on alternative fuels, leading to hesitance among transportation companies to make the switch.

To tackle these challenges, the collaboration between Idemitsu, T2, and Isuzu will assess the operational effectiveness of IRD in real-world scenarios through T2's autonomous trucks. This analysis will focus on refueling operations while also addressing the need for expanding the number of biodiesel refueling stations. The goal is to create a more conducive ecosystem for the growth of next-generation biodiesel fuels.

Idemitsu is also committed to enhancing the refueling experience by exploring portable fuel tank options that do not rely solely on fixed installation, thereby providing logistics companies with greater flexibility in utilizing biodiesel. Additionally, the company is looking into establishing dedicated service stations for biodiesel and developing blended renewable diesel fuels to further facilitate adoption.

The Vision of T2 and Isuzu


T2 aims to support Japan's logistics ecosystem through the application of autonomous driving technology, with plans to initiate level 4 autonomous truck operations by 2027. Key infrastructure, such as driver changeover points known as "trans-gates," have already begun construction in Kanagawa and Hyogo, facilitating uninterrupted long-distance runs that will help in achieving carbon neutrality through automated operations.

Isuzu’s multi-pathway strategy in reducing carbon emissions includes embracing next-generation biodiesel as a viable low-carbon solution alongside electrification efforts. The company is eager to advance the testing and eventual real-world implementation of biodiesel in partnership with Idemitsu and T2, focusing on resolving various challenges to ensure the successful integration of this innovative fuel.

As the three companies embark on this exciting new venture, they exemplify the proactive steps needed to secure a sustainable transportation future.
