The Rise of AI and Its Impact on Entry-Level Job Market
In a recent survey conducted by Resume.org, a prominent platform specializing in resume building, alarming statistics emerged regarding the future of entry-level employment in the context of advancing artificial intelligence (AI). The survey, involving nearly 1,000 business leaders across the United States, reveals that a staggering 21% of companies have already halted their hiring of entry-level workers and this trend is set to escalate. By the end of 2026, 36% of these companies anticipate ceasing entry-level hiring altogether, with expectations that this figure could climb to nearly half by 2027.
The reasons behind these hiring freezes are largely attributed to the rise of AI technologies. Among the surveyed companies, 21% cited AI as the sole reason for eliminating roles, while 19% identified it as the primary factor contributing to this significant shift in workforce dynamics. Interestingly, 26% acknowledged AI as just one of several contributing factors for reducing entry-level positions.
The implications of these findings are profound, suggesting a potential future where entry-level roles could largely disappear from many organizations. The survey also revealed that around 12% of companies have already eliminated existing entry-level positions due to AI systems, and a further 21% expect similar outcomes before this year concludes. Alarmingly, this indicates that a third of companies foresee a future where entry-level jobs are extinct, at least within their organizations.
While the focus has predominantly been on entry-level roles, mid-level and senior-level jobs are also feeling the effects. Currently, 11% of companies identified that AI has already affected mid-level roles, and 10% reported similar disruptions in senior-level positions. Projections suggest these numbers will rise to 24% and 26% respectively by year-end, highlighting a broader trend of workforce changes driven by technological advancement.
Interestingly, the survey also indicates that not all hiring is on hold. While companies are reducing entry-level positions, 47% stated they are focusing on hiring more employees skilled in technology or AI, and 48% aim to recruit individuals proficient in using AI tools. Kara Dennison, the head of career advising at Resume.org, elaborated on the consequences for employees lacking AI skills. She noted, "Employees without AI skills risk being sidelined as technologies augment or replace traditional functions. AI skills are crucial for maintaining relevance in today's job market."
The expectation of layoffs looms large, as more than half of the surveyed business leaders foresee their companies reducing staff specifically due to AI-driven consolidation of roles in 2026. Currently, 29% reported that layoffs have already occurred, and 22% plan to carry them out next year.
