New Mud Springs Trail Opens Near Moab for Mountain Biking Enthusiasts

The newly inaugurated Mud Springs Trail System, situated just outside Moab in San Juan County, is set to enhance the mountain biking landscape in Utah, particularly for enthusiasts seeking accessible trails. Officially opened on September 11, 2026, this trail system brings a significant addition to Moab's already vaunted biking reputation, which attracts riders from around the world. Amid a celebration attended by local and regional partners, the trail system kicks off with an impressive lineup of well-engineered paths designed to cater to diverse cycling abilities.

Spanning approximately 11 miles, the initial phase includes seven miles of beginner and intermediate trails, constructed successfully last fall, alongside an additional 3.5 miles of intermediate and advanced trails slated for completion this season. The high-quality trails include machine-built features that make for a smooth and engaging ride, complete with flowing turns and berms to keep riders safely in control while they enjoy the stunning views of the La Sal Mountain range.

Michael Soleta, the director of the Moab Office of Tourism, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, indicating that it significantly diversifies the existing options in the area. "Moab is internationally recognized for mountain biking, and Mud Springs serves as a new avenue for people of all abilities to experience what makes this region special. It adds to our already vibrant biking community, providing a perfect mix for families, adaptive cyclists, and newcomers to the sport."

The opening coincided with the first race weekend of the Utah High School Cycling League at Mud Springs, bringing together over 1,100 young mountain biking athletes to compete. This event not only celebrates the remarkable new facility but also highlights the area’s commitment to fostering youth involvement in cycling. The trails designed for competitive racing further position Mud Springs as a suitable venue for future events, nurturing the competitive spirit and ensuring that the area continues to thrive as a premier mountain biking hub.

One of the standout features of the development is its inclusivity. The trail creation process included thoughtful consideration for riders with disabilities. Collaborating with the National Ability Center, staff tested handcycles to ensure that adaptive equipment could seamlessly navigate the trails, confirming that the system truly caters to all ground levels of cyclists. As a result, the facility will not only host competitive events but also invite adaptive cycling competitions and running events, further broadening its appeal.

Looking towards its future, Mud Springs Trail is poised to become a staple for both local riders and visitors alike, expanding the options for mountain biking enthusiasts. With its ability to support various skills and promote an active lifestyle, the new trail system promises to elevate Moab’s status in the outdoor realm, making it a must-visit destination for biking lovers.

For those planning to explore the trails of Mud Springs, the Moab area is home to numerous biking experiences, including the popular Slickrock and The Whole Enchilada trails, along with more beginner-friendly options such as the Moab Brands trail system and Klonzo. With resources like local bike shops, guides, and shuttle services readily available, every rider can discover the immense beauty and thrill of biking amid breathtaking landscapes. Whether for a leisurely ride with family or an adrenaline-filled race, Mud Springs offers an exciting new chapter in Moab's mountain biking story.
