China Medical University Hospital Achieves Global Recognition in Neurosurgery for 2027

China Medical University Hospital Recognized as a Leader in Neurosurgery

In an impressive accomplishment, the China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) has been honored in Newsweek's World's Best Specialized Hospitals list for 2027 under the Neurosurgery category. This esteemed recognition places CMUH as the only hospital from Taiwan included in this global ranking, highlighting the institution's enduring strengths in managing complex neurosurgical cases.

The acknowledgment reflects CMUH's commitment to advanced healthcare, particularly in treating high-risk neurological conditions through a multidisciplinary approach. Their approach combines traditional surgical expertise with cutting-edge research, contributing to significant outcomes in areas such as cell therapy and precision medicine.

A Comprehensive Approach to Neurosurgery

Dr. Der-Yang Cho, who serves as the superintendent of CMUH, emphasized that this recognition is a testament to years of dedicated clinical practice, research advancements, and collaborative efforts among various specialties. “Our care model prioritizes individual patient needs, seamlessly integrating neurosurgery with emergency and critical care services,” explained Cho. This integrated framework allows the hospital to provide coordinated care specifically tailored for patients facing acute and highly complex neurological issues.

Each year, CMUH undertakes over 5,000 neurosurgical procedures, which encompass a wide range of treatments for conditions such as brain tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, and spinal disorders. Employing advanced neuroimaging technologies and intraoperative monitoring, CMUH manages to excise tumors while minimizing risks to critical neurological functions such as speech and movement. Furthermore, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in their clinical workflows has proven to enhance diagnostic and treatment efficiencies, catering especially to emergencies involving intracranial hemorrhage and severe traumatic injuries.

Pioneering Research in Cell Therapy

Among CMUH's groundbreaking innovations is the CAR001 therapeutic approach, an allogeneic CAR gamma delta (γδ) T-cell therapy developed in collaboration with Ever Supreme Bio Technology Co., Ltd. This promising therapy employs mRNA-engineered T cells that target HLA-G and is currently investigated in treating relapsed or resistant solid tumors, including glioblastoma—a notoriously aggressive type of brain cancer.

In a notable case, a patient with recurrent glioblastoma participated in the CAR001 clinical trial after her previous treatments had failed, leaving her with a limited prognosis. Remarkably, post-treatment assessments revealed significant neurological and functional improvements, coupled with no detectable tumor remnants in follow-up imaging, showcasing the potential of this innovative therapy for patients with otherwise limited options.

Future Directions and Commitment to Research

Looking toward the future, CMUH is set to broaden its research initiatives in fields such as exosomes, mitochondrial medicine, and regenerative therapies, targeting diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, as well as spinal cord injuries. “Our vision is to create advanced treatment options rooted in Taiwan that cater to the specific needs of our patients,” stated Cho.

This recognition by Newsweek, developed in partnership with Statista, highlights the top 125 hospitals worldwide under the Neurosurgery specialty based on peer endorsements, accreditations, and patient-reported outcomes. The dedication of CMUH to both clinical excellence and pioneering research exemplifies its pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare in neurosurgery. With a steadfast commitment to innovation and patient care, CMUH continues to set standards in the medical field both locally and globally.
