New Grant Initiative for Copyright Law Research
The Japan Reproduction Rights Center (JRRC), in collaboration with the Society for the Management of Compensation for Public Transmission for Educational Purposes (SARTRAS), is set to launch a new grant initiative from fiscal year 2026 aimed at promoting research in copyright law. This initiative will consist of three distinct types of funding aimed at researchers, university libraries, and public libraries.
Overview of the Grant Initiative
The newly introduced grant program encompasses the following types of funding:
1.
Research Grants for copyright law researchers.
2.
Publication Grants to assist in publishing research findings.
3.
Library Purchase Grants aimed at university and public libraries for acquiring relevant materials.
JRRC encourages interested candidates and institutions to consider applying for this funding opportunity to advance their work in copyright law research. Application Period
Applications for the grant will be accepted through the dedicated website from the following dates:
- - Research and Publication Grants: Accepting applications from July 15, 2026 (Wednesday) at 10:00 until September 10, 2026 (Thursday) at 15:00.
- - Library Purchase Grants: Open for applications from July 15, 2026 (Wednesday) at 10:00 until September 24, 2026 (Thursday) at 15:00.
Notably, funding for Library Purchase Grants will also be available in 2027.
Applicant Orientation Sessions
To provide further insight into the grant application process, JRRC will be hosting orientation sessions via Zoom on the following dates:
1. July 14, 2026 (Tuesday) from 14:00 to 15:00
2. July 15, 2026 (Wednesday) from 11:00 to 12:00
3. July 21, 2026 (Tuesday) from 14:00 to 15:00

Founded in 1991, the Japan Reproduction Rights Center (JRRC) serves as a central management organization for copyright license agreements, particularly focusing on language and other copyrighted works. With an impressive portfolio, JRRC has facilitated copyright permissions for approximately 5,550 entities, including government agencies and publicly traded companies.
In the fiscal year 2025, the total revenue from license fees is projected to reach around 890 million yen, benefitting creators through proper distribution of the collected fees to copyright holders.
The JRRC streamlines authorizations for reproducing various domestic copyrighted materials such as newspapers, magazines, academic papers, and artworks via their comprehensive license agreement. More details regarding this program can be found in the

Additionally, JRRC offers free copyright courses annually at both beginner and intermediate levels, ideal for self-development or corporate training purposes.
