Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project Receives Prestigious Biodiversity Award at Global Summit

The recent conclusion of the "AI with Purpose Global Summit Taipei 2025" marked a significant achievement for Taiwan Mobile as its "AI Ocean Project" was honored with the prestigious Biodiversity Award. Co-hosted by Taiwan Mobile, the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association (TEEMA), this summit brought together nearly a thousand experts from various sectors. The summit focused on the crucial role of AI in sustainability, emphasizing digital infrastructure alongside global collaboration.

Taipei hosted this two-day event, which highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence in promoting sustainable solutions. The Digital with Purpose Awards ceremony crowned Taiwan Mobile's remarkable debut with the AI Ocean Project, selected from over 24 international nominees. This victory underscores Taiwan's leadership in integrating technology with ecological conservation and emphasizes the growing importance of AI-driven environmental initiatives.

Dr. Tzi-cker Chiueh, General Director of the Delta Research Center, initiated the discussions of the day by emphasizing the vital role of smart matching for green electricity to expand sustainable AI efforts. Following his address, Dr. Yi-Chin Lin, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, elaborated on Taiwan's five core strategies for AI development: enhancing computing power, improving data sharing, cultivating talent, promoting industry collaboration, and securing capital investment.

Among the most notable aspects of Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project is its combining of AI image recognition, generative AI chatbots, and community involvement to create a comprehensive marine species database in Traditional Chinese. This innovative project has seen contributions from over 9,000 citizens who submitted more than 19,000 images, enabling the AI system to identify over 150 common marine species found in Taiwanese waters.

Iris Liu, the Vice President of Sustainable Brand PR at Taiwan Mobile and a Board Member of GeSI, praised the AI Ocean Project as a clear demonstration of Taiwan Mobile's commitment to digital transformation with purpose. "This award transcends mere technological achievements; it symbolizes the meaningful application of digital resources for fostering sustainable change," Liu remarked, reinforcing the message behind the project.

Luís Neves, CEO of GeSI, expressed the significant impact of the summit and endorsed the "AI with Purpose" philosophy as a cooperative initiative aimed at constructing a peaceful and sustainable future for everyone. He confirmed GeSI's intention to return to Taipei for future collaborations.

In addition, Richard Lee, Chairman of TEEMA, reaffirmed the potential of AI as a powerful tool for social good and environmental stewardship. He reiterated Taiwan's determination to lead the way in responsible AI development and global partnerships that prioritize sustainability.

This recognition of Taiwan Mobile's AI Ocean Project not only emphasizes technological innovation but also serves as a reminder of the broader vision of harnessing digital advancements for the preservation of our ecosystem. With the support and collaboration of visionary leaders and a dedicated community, Taiwan stands at the forefront of integrating AI into sustainable practices, aiming for a greener future for all.
