Market Uncertainty Ahead of U.S. Midterms
On November 3, the control of Congress will be in focus as American citizens prepare to cast their votes for all 435 House seats and 35 Senate positions. This midterm election is critical as it could determine the course of President Donald Trump's remaining term, a subject that has garnered immense attention in recent months.
Currently, Republicans hold a narrow edge in the House with 218 seats compared to the Democrats' 214, while in the Senate, they maintain a majority with 53 members against the Democrats' 47. To regain control over the House, Democrats would need to gain approximately four additional seats. A win in the House would shift the Speaker's chair to the Democrats, allowing them to set the legislative agenda and dictate which bills are considered for a vote.
Recent predictions from the Polymarket forecast markets point towards a strong chance of a Democratic landslide victory. As of October 29, the markets indicated a 67% probability for a democratic sweep across both the House and Senate, a 28% chance for a Democratic majority in the House with a Republican Senate, and a mere 6% for a Republican sweep. Furthermore, the odds suggest a robust 93% probability that Democrats will secure the House.
With these figures, while a complete Democratic victory is within the realm of possibility, it is anything but assured. FP Markets' Chief Market Analyst, Aaron Hill, shared insights regarding potential market reactions. He highlighted a crucial question many investors might pose: will stocks maintain their momentum post-midterms, given the current record highs of U.S. stock indices?
Although he clarified that past performance does not guarantee future outcomes, studies conducted by JP Morgan reveal that the S&P 500 has recorded positive returns in the year following each midterm election since the 1950s. In the event of a divided Congress, Hill believes not much would change, potentially alleviating some pressure off long-term bond yields. However, a Democratic sweep could raise concerns regarding corporate tax policies and regulations, which may adversely impact stock prices.
