How Students Built Wi-Fi Infrastructure for School Festival

The Wi-Fi Revolution at Ichinoseki National College of Technology

In a remarkable endeavor, students from Ichinoseki National College of Technology, established in 1964, have taken the initiative to set up a complete Wi-Fi infrastructure for their upcoming school festival, known as Kosen Festival. With specialized training in technology, these students aimed to enhance the experience for festival-goers by providing reliable internet connectivity across the campus.

The project began in spring 2025, spearheaded by a group of information and software technology students. They conceptualized the idea of constructing a Wi-Fi network from scratch and pitched their plan to their network technology educators. The faculty, recognizing the potential, sought the assistance of Buffalo Inc., a leading provider of network equipment based in Chiyoda, Tokyo.

Buffalo responded enthusiastically, providing students with access to essential networking equipment, including their corporate-grade Wi-Fi 6E access points, WAPM-AXETR, and outdoor access points, WAPM-1266WDPRA. The company also organized hands-on workshops to empower the students with practical skills needed for the setup.

As part of their preparatory phase, students dedicated themselves to research and planning during after-school hours and summer breaks, culminating in nearly six months of hard work and collaboration. This experience not only fostered their technical skills but also encouraged teamwork and problem-solving abilities among participants.

The chosen equipment for the project included:
  • - WAPM-AXETR: A tri-band access point designed to support Wi-Fi 6E standards, capable of delivering speeds of 2401 + 1201 + 573 Mbps. The price for this device is approximately 148,500 yen (excluding tax). Product Details
  • - WAPM-1266WDPRA: A robust outdoor access point combining Wi-Fi 5 technology, rated at 866 + 400 Mbps, known for its durability, making it suitable for various environmental conditions, priced around 145,200 yen (excluding tax). Product Details
  • - BS-MS2016P: A multi-gig PoE smart switch capable of handling 10G, 5G, and 2.5G connections is also part of the setup, valued at approximately 176,000 yen (excluding tax). Product Details

Buffalo's collaboration with Ichinoseki National College of Technology presents a pioneering model for educational institutions that can seamlessly merge technical learning with practical application. The project not only demonstrates the capabilities and innovative spirit of the students but also reinforces the importance of community and industry partnerships in technological advancements in education.

As the Kosen Festival approaches, excitement grows not only among the students but also within the local community that eagerly awaits the enriched experience, made possible through the students' diligent efforts. This partnership exemplifies the extraordinary potential that emerges when academic institutions tap into modern technology and collaborative initiatives, showing how education can directly benefit community engagement and connectivity.

For those interested in exploring this case further, Buffalo’s dedicated page illustrates a comprehensive overview of the initiative and its impact on the community and the students involved. Together, they not only transformed their campus experience but paved the way for future technological undertakings in educational settings.
