Sportball Launches New Youth Sports Initiative in San Antonio East This Summer
Sportball Launches in San Antonio East
This summer promises to be exciting for families in San Antonio East, who will soon have access to Sportball, a leading name in youth sports in Canada. The new facility represents Sportball’s first venture in the San Antonio area, marking its fourth franchise launch in Texas after successful locations in Austin, Katy, and North Houston.
Sportball aims to foster a generation of confident and healthy children by instilling a love for sports through engaging play. The organization addresses the growing issue of early sport specialization that leads to burnout, revealing that a staggering 70% of children abandon sports by the age of 13. In contrast to traditional youth sports, which often prioritize competition and early commitment to a single sport, Sportball promotes a model centered around variety, enjoyment, and lifelong participation. Their research-backed approach emphasizes multi-sport involvement, preventing injuries related to overuse while cultivating well-rounded, confident young athletes.
The faces behind this new franchise are Mica and Alyssa Villalon, who are no strangers to Sportball’s success. The couple joined the company in 2005 as some of the first coaches at its original U.S. site in Austin. Over the years, they have propelled the Austin franchise's growth and, in 2012, took ownership of it. With the opening of the San Antonio East location, they step into the role of multi-unit operators.
Mica expressed his enthusiasm about this new venture: "Opening a second Sportball location has always been a long-term goal for us. The opportunity to build a new location from the ground up and implement all the learnings we've amassed over the last twenty years, while doing what we love, is such a joy.”
The new Sportball San Antonio East will offer diverse multi-sport classes for children aged 2-12, including parent-and-child classes, drop-off options, school programs, birthday parties, and seasonal camps. With activities spanning soccer, T-ball, basketball, tennis, volleyball, football, golf, and hockey, children are encouraged to explore various sports, helping them discover their interests and potential future pursuits as they grow. This new hub will cater to a wide range of neighborhoods, including Stone Oak, North Central San Antonio, Alamo Heights, Bulverde, and more.
Sportball’s current growth strategy aims to broaden its presence across the United States. Besides Texas, existing locations in the U.S. include Boston, Brooklyn, Phoenix, and South Bay, with future expansions anticipated.
Jason D'Rocha, Sportball’s Vice President and Growth Coach, shared the motivation behind this expansion: "Sportball has been growing across Canada for more than 30 years, creating a generation of healthy, active children. Our ongoing focus on expanding across the states reaffirms our commitment to help more kids experience the joy of play, while building a lifelong foundation of physical, social, and emotional skills.”
Through its franchise initiative, Sportball provides aspiring entrepreneurs a valuable opportunity to merge business with passion. This model allows franchise owners to create a successful and responsible business while nurturing the next generation of active kids.
