AstroX Becomes a JAXA Partner Startup
AstroX Inc., headquartered in Minamisoma, Fukushima, has officially announced its status as a “JAXA Partner Startup,” following JAXA's announcement of its startup support program in August. Under the leadership of CEO Shotake Oda, AstroX has been collaborating with JAXA through the J-SPARC initiative, focusing on the development of a balloon-based platform for a hanging posture control device.
JAXA's Partner Startup program aims to support startups that align closely with JAXA’s objectives and leverage its research outcomes. To qualify, a startup must be primarily engaged in one or more of the following efforts:
- - Utilizing outcomes from JAXA's co-creation and joint research activities.
- - Engaging in businesses based on licenses from JAXA’s patents.
- - Transferring technology from JAXA for commercial use.
- - Utilizing equipment developed by JAXA.
This recognition is expected to further accelerate AstroX's business trajectory, particularly in the burgeoning realm of space innovation.
What is J-SPARC?
The J-Space Partnership for Aerospace Research Cooperation (J-SPARC) is a program that fosters dialogue between JAXA and private sector entities aiming for space business initiatives. Since its launch in May 2018, it has successfully facilitated over 50 projects by enabling commitment from both parties for concept development, technical innovations, and proof of concepts—all geared towards creating new business ventures in the space industry.
In his statement, CEO Oda expressed pride in becoming a JAXA Partner Startup. He asserted, “Our vision to reclaim 'Japan as No. 1' in space development is contingent upon transforming space into a sustainable business foundation that transcends merely being a research theme. We must strategically respond to both domestic needs and international demands for launches and demonstrative technologies. Through our collaboration with JAXA, we aim to leverage the unique capabilities of Rockoon to drive economic growth in Japan.”
AstroX’s Role in Satellite Launch
The global space industry is witnessing unprecedented growth, with projections estimating the market could exceed 160 trillion yen by 2040. The demand for satellite-based services is rising sharply, particularly for small satellites, with launch needs reflecting this trend. However, Japan currently faces a significant challenge: nearly 100% of its small satellites are launched using foreign rockets due to a lack of domestic launch vehicles.
AstroX is striving to address this gap by advancing Rockoon technology, which enables air-launching payloads using high-altitude balloons. This innovative approach promises frequent, responsive, and cost-effective launch solutions, allowing Japan to establish a more robust domestic capability for satellite launches.
AstroX is committed to making space more accessible and revitalizing Japan's presence in the global space economy. This initiative not only enhances Japan’s technical capabilities but also promotes local entrepreneurship and innovation.
