About Okurayu Onsen

Founded in 1966, Okurayu Onsen is the only public bath in Machida City. The facility underwent renovations in December 2016, enhancing its offerings to include the hinoki bath and additional services like an infrared sauna (at an extra charge).

Significance of Sento Day

Sento Day, established in 1991, traces its origins back to 1964, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympics. The date was chosen to promote public health and well-being, as soaking in the bath after sports activities is beneficial. The phonetic association of the Japanese term for public bath, "sento" (1010), further popularized this day.

The first Lavender Bath was conducted on October 10, 1995, making this year the 20th anniversary of this aromatic tradition within Tokyo’s public baths.

Benefits of Lavender

The calming properties of lavender are attributed to its active compounds, including linalyl acetate, linalool, geraniol, and limonene. Research suggests these compounds have antibacterial, analgesic, relaxing, and sleep-promoting effects.
