AlUla Contemporary Art Museum: A New Cultural Hub in Saudi Arabia

On January 31, 2026, the much-anticipated AlUla Contemporary Art Museum was officially named as part of Saudi Arabia's vibrant cultural landscape. This museum marks a monumental step in the region’s commitment to arts and heritage, coinciding with the launch of its inaugural exhibition named "Arduna."

AlUla, located 1,100 kilometers from Riyadh in the majestic North West of Saudi Arabia, is known for its striking natural beauty and rich human heritage, including the UNESCO World Heritage site, Hegra. With the goal of celebrating this cultural legacy while inspiring future creativity, the Royal Commission for AlUla has established the museum as a dynamic platform that bridges traditional heritage with contemporary artistic expressions.

The AlUla Contemporary Art Museum aims to attract a diverse audience through various initiatives, including exhibitions, commissioned artworks, artist residencies, research, and publications. The architect Lina Ghotmeh is responsible for integrating the museum into the unique landscape of AlUla, furthering the vision of Saudi Arabia’s extensive cultural ambitions outlined in Vision 2030.

Hamad Alhomiedan, Director of Arts and Creative Economy at the Royal Commission for AlUla, emphasized the museum's role in connecting local heritage with the innovations shaping the global art scene. He remarked, "The AlUla Contemporary Art Museum is a crucial chapter in AlUla's journey, combining our profound local heritage with the innovations that shape the global landscape of art. Our mission is to create a platform that not only promotes Saudi voices but engages constructively with the broad international community."

"Arduna," which translates to “our land” in Arabic, is curated in collaboration with the prestigious Centre Pompidou in Paris, supported by the French Agency for the Development of AlUla (AFALULA). The exhibition will run from February 1 to April 15, 2026, featuring over 80 works that explore humanity’s evolving relationship with nature. Esteemed artists like Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Manal AlDowayan, and several others will showcase their contributions, alongside new commissioned pieces.

As part of the annual AlUla Arts Festival, which celebrates art, design, and culture, "Arduna" aims to foster dialogue between different artistic expressions—from modern to contemporary.
