Rissho University Library Exhibit
From December 8, 2025, the Rissho University Library in Kumagaya will host a special exhibition titled "The Footsteps of Professor Keiji Tanaka: Tracing His Journey through the Library Collection and Bibliophile Legacy." This exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of Professor Tanaka (1885-1975), who was a towering figure in geography and geographic studies as well as a passionate collector of historical maps and books.
Purpose and Highlights of the Exhibition
This exhibition is significant for two primary reasons. First, it features maps related to regions that were significant in Tanaka’s life. Visitors will have the chance to view historical maps from the 'Tanaka Keiji Library' collection, showcasing areas where he was born, grew up, and has visited. Secondly, this display will delve into Tanaka's own contributions more than past exhibitions, which have predominantly focused on his maps and illustrations. Notably, for the first time in ten years, there will be rare, cherished materials Tanaka himself deeply valued when acquired, as well as many of his published works.
Tanaka’s legacy as a researcher, educator, and mapmaker will be explored through an extensive collection on display, illustrating the numerous facets of his life and work, thus providing a remarkable opportunity for students, faculty, and the local community to engage with his remarkable journey. Moreover, guests can participate in a survey or quiz for a chance to win original university merchandise.
Special Opening Day
Mark your calendars for March 15, 2026, when Rissho University will host a special open campus event, allowing additional opportunities to explore the exhibition and delve into the rich resources of the library.
