Innovative Floating Ammonia Cracking Facility Receives Design Approval for Hydrogen Energy Supply

Introduction

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), alongside HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co., Ltd. (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI), has made a significant stride in the realm of hydrogen energy with the joint development of a floating ammonia cracking facility. Recently, this groundbreaking project has received Basic Design Approval (AiP) from Lloyd's Register (LR). This state-of-the-art facility aims to supply hydrogen energy to land by utilizing ammonia splitting technology on ships, directly connecting offshore hydrogen supplies to terrestrial markets. This move is expected to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy as a solution toward achieving a decarbonized society.

Project Overview

The floating ammonia cracking facility relies on a cogent conceptual design that encompasses a range of processes and basic arrangements. The core of this innovative technology hinges on the H2ACT® process, allowing for a staggering supply of up to 1,000 tons of hydrogen daily through ammonia decomposition. This is achieved through a modular design developed in collaboration with Kellogg Brown & Root LLC (KBR). Moreover, new catalytic technologies are being explored and applied in partnership with Amogy Inc.

The Significance of This Development

The AiP was officially awarded during the Gastech Exhibition & Conference 2025 held in Milan, Italy, on September 9. As global demand for clean energy sources, particularly hydrogen, surges, the establishment of a robust supply chain has become paramount. By decomposing ammonia at sea, the generated hydrogen can be efficiently supplied to onshore locations, effectively addressing areas where building terrestrial bases for hydrogen production may present challenges. This initiative not only promises a stable supply of clean energy in such regions but also plays a pivotal role in constructing a hydrogen supply chain pivotal for decarbonization.

Collaboration Among Industry Leaders

The success of this project is attributed to the collaborative efforts from key industry players:
  • - Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL): In charge of requirements specification and market analysis contributing to the foundation of this project.
  • - HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE): Focused on the design of the ammonia supply system and conducting comprehensive feasibility assessments.
  • - HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI): Responsible for the conceptual design of the floating ammonia cracking facility.
  • - Lloyd’s Register (LR): Engaged in technical evaluation and auditing of the project.
  • - Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR): Tasked with designing the ammonia cracking process and corresponding modules.
  • - Amogy Inc.: Involved in verifying the performance of ammonia cracking catalysts.

Conclusion

As we stand at the cusp of a new era in energy solutions, floating ammonia cracking facilities represent a viable route towards sustainable hydrogen production and distribution. This initiative underscores the rising significance of collaborative innovation in tackling global energy challenges, driving the transition towards a decarbonized future. The joint efforts of MOL, HD KSOE, and HHI illustrate the potential of maritime technology in fostering cleaner energy alternatives that can elevate the world toward its environmental goals.
