Enhancing Child Passenger Safety in Washington
In a significant step toward improving child passenger safety, Hyundai Motor America has partnered with Seattle Children's to expand child passenger safety education in Washington. This collaboration is primarily aimed at underserved communities, providing vital resources to families who might otherwise have limited access to such services.
Investing in Community Safety
Hyundai has committed $25,000 through its corporate social responsibility initiative, Hyundai Hope, to support this program which aims to benefit around 300 families in South King County over the next two years. The focus of the initiative is to offer free car seat safety checks and educational events throughout the region.
Cole Stutz, the Chief Safety Officer at Hyundai Motor North America, emphasized, "Helping keep children safe on the road starts with ensuring families have access to the education and resources they need." Through hands-on, practical sessions, the partnership will educate parents and caregivers about proper car seat installation and usage.
A Pressing Need for Safety
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that nearly half of car seats and booster seats are incorrectly installed or improperly used. The correct use of these safety devices can substantially decrease the risk of fatal injuries—by 71% for infants under one year old and 54% for toddlers aged 1 to 4. This alarming data underscores the necessity of initiatives like the one launched by Hyundai and Seattle Children's.
Free Community Car Seat Checks
The program initiated by Seattle Children's merges certified safety expertise with community engagement to diminish preventable injuries. Year-round car seat checks will take place in areas such as Federal Way, Seattle, and Bellevue, where families can receive valuable information, guidance, and the opportunity to have their car seats assessed by certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.
At these community events, technicians will instruct caregivers on the correct way to install car seats and will also check for any expired or recalled seats, providing replacements as necessary. The investment from Hyundai will enhance the reach and effectiveness of Seattle Children's safety services over the next two years.
Isabell Sakamoto, Manager of Community Health at Seattle Children’s, expressed gratitude for Hyundai's support, stating, "Thanks to the support, Seattle Children's will expand community car seat check events into South King County over the next two years, bringing vital safety resources and hands-on guidance directly to the families who need them most." This partnership is not only about providing resources but also about empowering families with the knowledge they need to keep their children safe.
Strengthening Community Connections
Jim Walen, dealer principal of Seattle Hyundai, highlighted the role of the dealer network in extending the program's reach. He stated, "As a Hyundai dealer, we're proud to help connect our community with resources that promote child passenger safety and provide peace of mind for parents and caregivers."
Hyundai's commitment to child safety is reflected in this collaboration, which aims to foster healthier and safer communities. By partnering with children's hospitals across the country, Hyundai extends its mission to offer car seat inspections, safety education, and necessary resources that nurture and protect children while they travel.
