Greentown Labs and Nominal Partner to Accelerate Climate Solutions in Houston's Industrial Sector

Greentown Labs and Nominal Create Industrial Center of Excellence

In a pioneering move to bolster innovation in the climate technology and energy sectors, Greentown Labs has partnered with Nominal to establish an Industrial Center of Excellence at their Houston location. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards enhancing support for startups focused on sustainability and decarbonization.

The Vision Behind the Center

Greentown Labs is widely recognized as the largest climatetech and energy startup incubator globally, while Nominal offers a modern software platform tailored for hardware testing across diverse industries, including energy, robotics, aerospace, and defense. The newly launched center aims to advance the efficiency and scalability of industrial system innovations developed by the startups incubated at Greentown Houston.

Currently, about one-third of the startups within this hub are dedicated to de-carbonizing the manufacturing sector, which is a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions—accounting for approximately 31 percent of the total. Innovative solutions emerging from these efforts include sustainable steel production and the transformation of plastic waste into usable fuel, underlining the urgent need for effective climate solutions.

Empowering Entrepreneurs

The partnership seeks to empower innovative entrepreneurs by offering streamlined pathways for their ideas to transition from prototypes to impactful global implementations. Bryce Strauss, co-founder of Nominal, emphasizes that the future depends on teams that can deliver reliable hardware with speed and agility. "Competitive edge is defined by test velocity," asserts Strauss, highlighting the importance of real-time decision-making in successful engineering practices.

As part of the initiatives within the Industrial Center of Excellence, both organizations will co-develop a series of specialized workshops tailored to address the specific needs of startups, corporate firms, and technical teams. These workshops will facilitate collaborative learning, enabling teams to enhance their competencies and operational frameworks in real-time.

In addition to workshops, Nominal will provide weekly office hours at Greentown Houston, offering startups free consultations about developing robust test infrastructures and expediting their operational cycles. This hands-on approach aims to address the critical challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the climate tech space, ensuring that they can scale their operations effectively.

A Future-Focused Approach

Lawson Gow, the Head of Houston for Greentown Labs, shares that the mission centers around reducing friction for innovative entrepreneurs, enabling them to rapidly scale transformative solutions. The new center will complement Greentown's existing prototyping and laboratory facilities, thus accelerating the journey of groundbreaking technologies from lab-based concepts to real-world applications.

By fostering this collaborative environment, the Industrial Center of Excellence aims to create not just novel solutions but also a thriving community of innovators who can address the pressing challenges posed by climate change. Startups are encouraged to explore these new opportunities and take advantage of the groundbreaking resources available.
