Understanding the Challenges Faced by Single Mothers
A recent survey conducted by human joint Co., Ltd., headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo, has shed light on the pressing issues faced by single mothers across Japan. Between October 3rd and 6th, 2025, an online questionnaire was distributed to 1,000 single mothers aged between 20 and 69, all holding a driver's license, to understand their realities better. The results highlight significant concerns surrounding financial burdens, personal time, and a sense of loneliness.
Key Findings from the Survey
The data revealed that the foremost worry among single mothers is related to finance, particularly living expenses and child-rearing costs, with
76.3% expressing anxiety over their economic situations. Following this,
27.7% of respondents cited a lack of personal time as a major concern, while
25.5% mentioned feelings of loneliness. The survey also indicated that around
70% of single mothers either live with their parents or close by, mainly to secure a sense of comfort, rely on them for childcare, or for financial support, showing a profound connection between proximity to family and emotional relief.
Transportation Choices and Vehicle Ownership
An exploration into the transportation habits of single mothers unveiled that
76.7% predominantly rely on private cars for daily activities such as school pickups and shopping. Among those without a vehicle, about
20% expressed a desire to own one, especially in areas like Tohoku, where the absence of a car significantly limits mobility. However, many face hurdles in acquiring vehicles due to concerns over obtaining loans. Nearly
66% of respondents highlighted worries about financial assessments with statements like, "Will I pass the loan review?" and "Are maintenance costs too high?"
Economic Anxiety and Its Regional impact
The survey indicated a stark regional disparity in the economic concerns of single mothers. In particular, Tohoku ranked highest in anxiety over living and child-rearing costs, followed closely by Chubu and Kinki regions. Moreover, the findings revealed that nearly
20% of single mothers in their 30s and 40s have experienced difficulties in passing loan evaluations, signifying a significant psychological and financial burden on this demographic, especially with unexpected expenses arising frequently.
Cohabitation with Family for Support
A significant proportion of single mothers,
30.4%, reside with their parents, while others live within a short distance. The primary reasons cited for this choice included the need for emotional serenity, support for childcare, and financial security, with over
90% reporting that cohabitation significantly alleviates their daily struggles.
The Need for Economic Solutions
In response to the growing demand for accessible financial solutions, human joint Co., Ltd. has emphasized the role of its unique product, the
COCOCAR loan, which is tailored for those struggling to secure traditional auto loans. This initiative boasts a
97.6% loan approval rate, making it a lifeline for those with financial histories that may impede loan approvals elsewhere.
Conclusion
As the survey reveals, single mothers in Japan are grappling with numerous challenges, particularly in terms of financial security and emotional support. The information gathered indicates a strong need for enhanced resources and effective solutions tailored to support single mothers in their day-to-day lives. The commitment of human joint Co., Ltd. to address these issues highlights the growing awareness and necessity for societal support systems.
