Kyushu University and ONIXION Win Special Award at GENIAC-PRIZE for Innovative Battery Simulation AI Agent

Kyushu University and ONIXION Win at GENIAC-PRIZE

In a remarkable achievement, Kyushu University’s graduate school, in collaboration with ONIXION, has been awarded a special regional prize at the GENIAC-PRIZE. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and NEDO, this prestigious award recognizes advancements in AI applications aimed at solving societal challenges. The award ceremony took place amidst fierce competition, featuring over 200 applicants, showcasing the innovative strides being made in technology and its application in everyday challenges.

About GENIAC-PRIZE

The GENIAC-PRIZE, part of a program with a total prize pool of approximately 800 million yen, encourages the development and practical implementation of generative AI applications across three primary fields: societal issues, government efficiency, and safety. The initiative aims to accelerate the deployment and utility of generative AI applications to benefit various regions and sectors.

At the final evaluation held on March 24, 2026, Kyushu University and ONIXION emerged victorious in the category focusing on improving productivity in customer support, specifically targeting the development of AI agents for addressing complex research challenges in battery technology.

Project Overview

The collaborative project focuses on an innovative technique to significantly enhance the battery R&D process. It aims to replace extensive consultations with experts that typically consume considerable time. This was achieved by implementing an AI agent that encapsulates the tacit knowledge of professionals, enabling it to assist users in formulating clear queries and addressing requests with minimal guidance.

The AI agent draws on the expertise from Professor Motohito Inoue’s laboratory, employing an autonomous reasoning system that systematically integrates user inquiries and generates precise condition definitions equivalent to those established by experts. This transformation reduces the process time from a month to just a day, streamlining the research process while maintaining superior accuracy.

Technical Achievement

The AI agent operates through a self-regulating thought loop—Plan-Act-Reflect—which not only facilitates customer communication but also automates the complex computational condition settings previously undertaken by specialists. This allows for enhanced productivity, making high-level expertise more accessible to a broader audience.

Statements from Leaders

Reiji Kume, CEO of ONIXION, expressed his gratitude for receiving the prestigious award: “I am deeply honored to accept this award. I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to all the professors and stakeholders at Kyushu University for their invaluable guidance and collaboration. Our mission to resolve industrial challenges via AI technology drives our efforts daily, and this award is a testament to the academic knowledge and dedication we have received from Kyushu University.”

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, ONIXION is committed to advancing the development and implementation of AI agents tailored for specialized fields. Leveraging generative AI and large language models, the company will continue supporting industries that require in-depth expertise for critical functions—enhancing decision-making, clarifying requirements, and facilitating inquiries. Through the optimization of solutions in specific sectors, ONIXION seeks to promote operational efficiency and bolster industrial competitiveness.
