Victory for Teamsters Local 283: Marathon Petroleum Workers Celebrate End of Struggle with New Contract

Teamsters Local 283 Secures Major Gains at Marathon Petroleum

In a remarkable show of unity and resilience, members of Teamsters Local 283 have successfully ratified a new contract with Marathon Petroleum, effectively ending a 101-day strike at the company's Detroit refinery. This significant achievement, which took place in December 2024, showcases the determination of the workers who stood firm against a major corporation known for its substantial profits.

The strike, which began in September, was initiated when Marathon Petroleum refused to engage in good faith negotiations regarding the workers' contract. Union members, equipped with strength and solidarity, took to the picket line to demand better working conditions and compensation. As Steve Hicks, President of Local 283, noted, “Despite raking in billions in profits each year, Marathon Petroleum fought Teamsters for more than a year on a contract that rewards those who make them profitable.”

The newly ratified agreement included several essential provisions designed to support workers and their families:
  • - A 24.5% wage increase over the duration of the contract.
  • - Health care coverage fully paid for by the employer.
  • - Reinforcement of union security provisions.
  • - Access to the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund, which enhances long-term financial security for the workers.

Such milestones did not come easily. The arduous 101-day strike exemplified the unwavering commitment of Teamsters members who put their livelihoods on the line for fair treatment. Jeff Tricoff, a relief operator and Local 283 shop steward, expressed pride in his colleagues, stating, “After 101 days of showing the biggest oil refiner in America what it means to be Teamsters strong, we've secured a contract.”

This sentiment was echoed by Rocco Calo, Director of the Teamsters Industrial Trades Division. He praised the workers for demonstrating solidarity and fortitude throughout the strike.
