Qatar's Years of Culture Initiative Unveils New Global Partnerships for 2026 and 2027

In a significant announcement from Doha, Qatar, the renowned Years of Culture initiative has revealed plans for cultural partnerships with Canada and Mexico for 2026, followed by Egypt and Greece in 2027. This project aims to foster mutual respect, cultural exchange, and collaboration across borders.

Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, chairperson of the initiative, emphasized the importance of this program as a legacy of the FIFA World Cup 2022. Since its inception more than a decade ago, the initiative has gained momentum in promoting understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures while showcasing Qatar’s own rich heritage. This year's collaboration highlights Argentinian and Chilean cultures and sets the stage for engaging with North America in 2026.

The Years of Culture program, launched in 2012, seeks to establish long-lasting connections between Qatar and its partner nations through various exchange programs encompassing cultural, educational, economic, and creative activities. This initiative echoes Qatar's belief that cultural collaboration enhances dialogue, strengthens international relationships, and cultivates understanding globally.

In particular, the year 2026 will bring a unique symmetry as the FIFA World Cup 2026™ will be hosted collaboratively by Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This particular tournament provided the impetus for establishing the Years of Culture initiative when Qatar was awarded the right to host the World Cup. The collaboration aims to reflect the spirit of global unity embodied by the games and will underscore the power of football in connecting cultures. Additional programs developed during this year will act as legacy projects from Qatar's previous cultural initiatives with the USA in 2021.

Looking ahead to 2027, Qatar plans to honor the rich cultural legacies of Egypt and Greece, two civilizations that have profoundly influenced the trajectory of world history and continue to shape contemporary culture, philosophy, and art. This partnership aims to weave their storied traditions with the vibrant tapestry of Qatar's cultural landscape.

During each cultural year, Qatar collaborates closely with cultural institutions, embassies, artists, and educators to create a diverse calendar filled with exhibitions, festivals, fairs, residencies, academic exchange programs, and public events in both participant countries. The meticulous planning often begins well before the official year and extends far beyond it, ensuring that lasting legacies and relationships are cultivated.

Since its launch, Years of Culture has successfully created partnerships with a multitude of countries including Japan (2012), the United Kingdom (2013), Brazil (2014), Turkey (2015), China (2016), Germany (2017), Russia (2018), India (2019), France (2020), the USA (2021), the MENASA region (2022), Indonesia (2023), and Morocco (2024). Currently, Qatar is celebrating a cultural exchange with Argentina and Chile in 2025.
