Empowering Futures: Special Needs Students Experience Coffee Roasting

On March 18, 2026, a group of first-year high school students from a special needs school participated in a unique workplace training program at BYSN ISEHARA ROASTERY in Isehara City, Kanagawa Prefecture. This program, organized by Start Line, a company aiming to create a society where everyone can live authentically, offered students the opportunity to connect their special education experiences with actual job environments.

Program Overview

The event lasted from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM and included 23 participants, comprising 18 students and 5 teachers. The agenda was thoughtfully crafted to provide students with insights into potential careers through various activities:

- Introduction to BYSN ISEHARA ROASTERY and its mission
- Lectures on the types of roles available and how students can prepare in school
- Facility tours to observe the coffee roasting process
- Hands-on experiences with tasks like selecting coffee beans, roasting, and packaging

In addition to lectures, the program allowed students to engage in real work processes, offering them a tangible understanding of what it means to work in a professional setting.

Hands-On Experience

During the program, students participated in a hand-picking activity that involved selecting the best coffee beans. They also had a chance to see the roasting machines in operation. Collecting feedback from the students demonstrated the significant impact this experience had on their outlook:

- Many expressed their commitment to actively listen and avoid misunderstandings.
- They acknowledged the importance of following rules.
- A sense of personal responsibility was evident as students voiced their desire to handle tasks independently.
- Reflecting on the difficulty of sorting coffee beans, they noted the challenges but also the satisfaction of struggling through tasks.

Teacher Insights

Teachers reported on the profound value of the experience for the students. One teacher highlighted that since the students were only in their first year of high school, many lacked a clear vision of their future careers. While students had been gradually adjusting to work through school activities, hands-on experiences in real-world settings are few and far between.
This program offered an essential opportunity to directly engage with professionals in a workplace, a rarity that added immense value to their learning process.
One teacher remarked, “Students previously intimidated by work found inspiration from today’s experience, leading them to think, ‘I can do this too!’” Through such initiatives, Start Line aims to build future pathways for young individuals, making them feel empowered and capable.

About BYSN ISEHARA ROASTERY

Launched in June 2025, BYSN ISEHARA ROASTERY serves as a roastery aimed at supporting employment for people with disabilities through coffee roasting. Employees with disabilities work under professional conditions using specialized roasting equipment to produce high-quality coffee beans. The roasted coffee is then seasoned into personalized blends for various uses such as employee gifts, promotional items, and other occasions.
In addition to offering day-to-day work, the facility has programs that support certification acquisition for coffee masters and tailor career progression based on individuals’ skills and ambitions. Currently, BYSN has approximately 10 managers and 60 employees with disabilities, with plans to expand this number significantly in the future.

Start Line remains committed to fostering opportunities for special needs students in collaboration with local schools. They aim to bridge educational experiences and society, ensuring that everyone can envision their future and work towards it, thereby supporting a vision of a world where all individuals can live authentically and meaningfully.
