Celebrating Excellence in International Civil Engineering
On October 2023, Naoyuki Asao, a distinguished project manager in the international railway division of Pacific Consultants, was honored with the
International Activity Encouragement Award by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This prestigious accolade recognizes his relentless commitment to advancing civil engineering through international collaboration, particularly across Southeast and South Asia.
A Journey of Impact
Naoyuki Asao has spent over 15 years dedicating his expertise to various railroad construction projects within the region. His impressive work encapsulates essential stages such as
Pre-Feasibility Studies (Pre-FS),
Feasibility Studies (FS), detailed designs, and construction supervision. Utilizing his vast knowledge from domestic projects, he has made significant contributions to international infrastructure developments.
For instance, in the context of the construction of the Yangon-Mandalay railway in Myanmar, Mr. Asao oversaw the entire process involving the investigation, design, and construction supervision of approximately 620 kilometers of track, bridges, and waterways. His innovative approach led to the integration of seismic design methods based on the earthquake hazard maps, fostering safer infrastructure development in the region.
His efforts were notably recognized during the Central Myanmar earthquake in 2025, where hundreds of new bridges he led the design and supervision of remained undamaged, proving the effectiveness of the seismic methods he advocated for.
Contributions to Civil Engineering
Asao’s impact spans beyond individual projects; he has actively participated in numerous international conferences, sharing papers, presenting findings, and contributing to technical guidance and training. His dedication to nurturing new talent and sharing knowledge exemplifies his commitment to enhancing the global presence of Japanese civil engineering.
