MonotaRO Partners with Prologis for Solar Energy Initiative

MonotaRO Teams Up with Prologis for Renewable Energy

In a significant step towards sustainable operations, MonotaRO, a prominent online store supporting workplace supply, has recently finalized a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Prologis, a global leader in logistics real estate. This collaboration focuses on integrating solar energy solutions into logistics operations, marking an innovative approach towards reducing carbon emissions.

The On-Site PPA Model Explained

The On-Site PPA model enables the generation of green electricity through solar power installations directly on the premises of the consumer. In this case, Prologis acts as the electricity generation company while MonotaRO is the consumer. The generated power will be supplied directly to MonotaRO facilities. This model not only empowers companies to utilize renewable energy but also contributes to broader societal goals of energy transition.

Implementation at Mito Distribution Center

MonotaRO plans to implement this solar power system at its Mito Distribution Center, which is currently under development in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. This venture marks MonotaRO's first endeavor in adopting the On-Site PPA model for its own logistics facilities. By the projected operational launch in April 2028, the solar plant is expected to be one of the largest in its category in terms of capacity.

Objectives and Impacts

MonotaRO has set an ambitious target to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 50% from 2020 levels by the year 2030. This initiative is a crucial step towards realizing that goal, bringing multiple benefits, including:
  • - Emission Reductions: By harnessing green power generated from its own facility, MonotaRO aims to establish a low-carbon logistics operation.
  • - Efficient Energy Use: Surplus energy generated beyond its own consumption will be supplied to the market through Prologis, thus contributing to the spread of renewable energy across society.
  • - Asset Efficiency: The On-Site PPA model allows MonotaRO to maintain asset efficiency without initial investment, ensuring stable long-term power costs.

Vision for Sustainable Logistics

MonotaRO is committed to collaborating with partner companies to advance sustainable logistics solutions and address pressing sustainability challenges. Their overarching vision revolves around transforming procurement networks to enhance customer productivity through higher-level service offerings.
