YORK® Rooftop Unit Surpasses Testing Phase for HVAC Technology Challenge

YORK® Rooftop Unit Achieves Milestone in HVAC Technology Challenge

YORK®, a renowned brand within the Bosch Home Comfort Group, has recently achieved a significant milestone in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge. The company's innovative all-electric 15-ton rooftop heat pump has successfully passed laboratory validation, setting new benchmarks for energy efficiency and sustainable practice in commercial building HVAC systems.

Innovative Design and Performance

The YORK rooftop unit is designed to perform optimally in cold climates, capable of maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures down to -10°F. Notably, it features a unique capacity to operate in both compressor and electric heating modes simultaneously, reducing the reliance on electric resistance heating. This dual approach not only enhances efficiency but also provides potential environmental benefits by supporting decarbonization efforts.

With the new developments, YORK illustrates its commitment to advancing HVAC technology and promoting energy-efficient solutions in commercial settings. Each unit can be used for both new installations and replacements, thanks to its versatile design. This flexibility is supported by a reliable control system that integrates seamlessly with various Building Automation Systems (BAS).

The unit's capacity for demand response enables better management of electric heating time, ensuring effective energy consumption even during peak loads.

Meeting Market Needs

YORK's Rooftop Unit was developed using the company's Choice rooftop platform, accommodating about 70% of existing installations. This thoughtful design minimizes the need for expensive transition curbs, allowing contractors to efficiently switch from older systems. The Choice platform stands out by providing options that cater to different efficiency standards, ensuring there’s a model suitable for various application requirements.

A significant enhancement in this new model is the direct drive supply fans which improve overall efficiency by removing typical belt loss issues. This design not only boosts performance but also simplifies service tasks, giving contractors straightforward access for speed adjustments according to specific project needs.

Commitment to Innovation and Leadership

David Budzinski, Global Deputy CEO and President of Bosch Home Comfort Group, stated, "The DOE Commercial Building HVAC Technology Challenge has allowed us to showcase our advanced engineering capabilities. Our strategic goals focus on innovation, maximizing efficiency, and addressing climate challenges through decarbonization. We are proud to participate in this initiative and look forward to enhancing our offerings further."

YORK's products, all manufactured at their facility in Norman, Oklahoma, not only meet the DOE's performance targets but also serve as a testament to U.S. leadership in clean energy solutions. This commitment significantly contributes to making cutting-edge technology more affordable and effective for customers while equipping the workforce with the necessary skills to enhance America's long-term competitiveness in the global market.

In addition to this announcement, plans are in place for a field trial of the YORK Rooftop Unit later this year. This trial will aim to evaluate the unit’s performance in real-world conditions, especially in regions experiencing extremely cold temperatures.

Under the umbrella of Bosch Home Comfort Group, the YORK brand stands as a symbol of efficient HVAC solutions tailored to meet diverse regional demands. With a robust workforce and extensive operational footprint across America, Europe, and Asia, Bosch continues to innovate and lead the HVAC industry towards a sustainable future.
