Unleashing the 2026 TSA Canine Calendar

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has once again gifted canine enthusiasts and aviation lovers alike with its annual TSA Canine Calendar for 2026. This beloved tradition highlights the exceptional working dogs that play a vital role in ensuring the safety of travelers across the United States.

Honoring Unsung Heroes

Every year, the TSA recognizes many of its over 1,000 explosives detection canines, and the 2026 edition is no exception. It features 13 incredible dogs selected from a pool of 97 teams that were submitted for consideration. Each month is dedicated to a different canine companion, showcasing stunning photography and fun facts about these devoted heroes.

Among this year’s featured dogs:
  • - Alex from Denver International Airport (DEN).
  • - Bingo from San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC).
  • - Chica from Indianapolis International Airport (IND).
  • - Csipi-Simjee from Orlando International Airport (MCO).
  • - Cypress from Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV).
  • - Erika from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).
  • - and many more!

Meet Steeler: The Star of the Calendar

This year, Steeler, a lovable three-year-old Labrador Retriever stationed at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), graces the cover. Steeler won the 2025 TSA Cutest Canine Contest, and he works alongside his handler, Mark Smith. Their teamwork is crucial in keeping passengers safe through Steeler's impressive sniffing skills. He’s not just a working dog but also a playful companion renowned for fetching balls, enjoying tug ropes, and of course, devouring jumbo hot dogs!

Interestingly, Steeler and his litter were born on Super Bowl Sunday in 2023, and they were all named after NFL teams—a tribute to the occasion that they came into the world.

A Closer Look at the Canine Program

The TSA prides itself on having the largest explosives detection program globally. Through rigorous training, TSA canine teams learn to effectively operate across many modes of transport, integrating teams across aviation, passenger rail, maritime, and cargo sectors.

Annually, around 300 canines complete an intensive 16-week training program at the TSA Canine Training Center located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. This specialized training ensures that these canine teams are not only adept at detection but are also highly mobile, capable of responding to threats in various environments.

For those wishing to get a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the challenges and triumphs faced by explosives detection canine handlers, the TSA offers an enlightening video showcasing their daily lives and the strong bonds formed between canines and their handlers.
