Synology Expands its All-Flash Enterprise Storage Solutions with FS3420
On July 9, 2023, Synology announced the launch of its new FS3420, an all-flash block and file storage system designed specifically for enterprise workloads that are sensitive to latency. This new system is set to significantly enhance IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) and throughput performance across on-premises virtualization, databases, and enterprise applications.
Jeffrey Huang, Synology’s Product Manager, emphasized that as more organizations are managing demanding on-premises workloads, there arises a pressing need for responsive storage solutions. He stated, "The FS3420 has substantially improved IOPS compared to previous models, thereby enhancing the performance of latency-sensitive workloads. It represents a strong choice for a broad spectrum of mid to large enterprises and colocation environments considering the adoption of enterprise applications and virtualization workloads."
Enhanced Enterprise Performance and Proven Reliability
The FS3420 is a 2U rack-mounted system with 24 bays, designed to provide excellent I/O responsiveness along with a marked increase in performance over previous generations. It achieves over 478,000 read IOPS and 169,000 write IOPS. Notably, reading performance has advanced by 21%, while writing performance increased by 32%. Furthermore, SMB read throughput has improved by over 60%, optimizing it for high-bandwidth file sharing.
Beyond speed, the FS3420 offers flexible connectivity options. It comes standard with dual 10GbE ports and can seamlessly integrate with high-speed network infrastructure by adding 25GbE or Fibre Channel adapters.
Reliability lies at the heart of its design. Redundant power supplies eliminate single points of failure, and the integrated 10GbE network supports failover and load balancing to ensure continuous operation. Additionally, out-of-band management enables remote troubleshooting and access to system logs even when the server is powered down.
Tailored for High-Demand Workloads
Equipped with Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM), the FS3420 brings the comprehensive capabilities of Synology's software ecosystem into the enterprise environment.
Broad Platform Compatibility
The FS3420 has received certification for use in VMware® vSphere®, Microsoft® Hyper-V®, Citrix®, and OpenStack environments.
Meeting the Demands of Challenging Workflows
Its high-speed network and all-flash capabilities address data and network-intensive workloads such as video post-production and large-scale CAD projects, which require multiple users to access large files via SMB or NFS.
Intelligent Storage Tiering
Synology Tiering efficiently manages data across performance and capacity tiers, maximizing storage efficiency. The FS3420 operates as a high-performance hot tier, preserving Flash capacity and IOPS headroom for critical workloads.
Built-In Data Protection
With Active Backup for Business, it enables unlimited virtual machine backups from physical servers, while Snapshot Replication offers granular recovery at the volume, folder, or file level, providing near-instant recovery points to meet RPO and RTO objectives.
Availability
The FS3420 will be available starting July 9, 2026, through Synology's worldwide network of partners and resellers. For more detailed information, please refer to the FS3420 page on Synology’s website.
Note: Performance values are based on Synology’s internal tests and actual performance may differ depending on test environment, usage, and configuration. For more details, please check the performance chart.
