D.O. Cava Announces Competition for Best Cava Sommelier in the U.S.

D.O. Cava's Quest for the Next Best Cava Sommelier

The D.O. Cava has launched a call for sommeliers across the United States to compete in the prestigious Best Cava Sommelier Competition, taking place at SommCon in San Diego. This exciting event, organized in collaboration with the Best USA Sommelier Association (BUSA), invites wine experts to showcase their skills and delve into the exquisite qualities of Cava de Guarda Superior, the highest expression of quality in this celebrated Spanish sparkling wine.

Competing for Excellence

This initiative underscores the importance of quality, origin, and traceability in discussions surrounding Cava. Competitors in the event are set to engage in a rigorous examination, which includes a blind tasting of the esteemed Cava de Guarda Superior. This prestigious classification encompasses Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Paraje Calificado, each crafted from grapes grown organically and subjected to stringent quality standards and extended aging periods.

Paraje Calificado, in particular, represents the pinnacle of Cava's quality hierarchy, reserved for exceptional wines sourced from unique terroirs. These wines must adhere to demanding requirements such as being derived from vineyards over ten years old, harvested by hand, having limited yields, and being estate-vinified with a minimum aging of 36 months before release.

The Competition Format

Under the outlined competition format, ten candidates will participate in an intensive 30-minute blind tasting round. This round serves as an elimination stage, with the top four sommeliers advancing to the service final. Each sommelier's proficiency in assessing the wines and conveying a thorough understanding of their quality and style will be put to the test.

Following the tasting, a D.O. CAVA masterclass will enrich the day's offerings with educational insights. The day will culminate in a live service competition, where the four finalists will each perform a 15-minute service round. This segment is designed to assess how expertly competitors can meld their technical wine knowledge into practical recommendations, thoughtful food pairings, and overall engaging guest experiences.

The goal of this format is to connect the art of tasting with the practical aspects of service, demonstrating the relevance of Cava de Guarda Superior within premium wine programs and elevated dining settings. Sommeliers will be confronted with queries about the distinctions between various styles and classifications of Cava, as well as how these wines can complement a diverse array of cuisine and events.

Aiming for Greater Understanding

The culmination of the competition will be marked by the announcement of the winners following the service final. Through the intersection of education and competition, D.O. CAVA aims to deepen the understanding of the U.S. sommelier community on Cava de Guarda Superior, enhancing recognition of its quality, versatility in gastronomy, and the unique characteristics imparted by its origins.

D.O. CAVA invites qualified sommeliers to rise to the challenge, putting their expertise to the test for the coveted title of Best Cava Sommelier in the U.S. Those interested in participating can find further details and apply via the official competition website.
