Fifty years ago, on August 24, 1976, Crémant d'Alsace officially received the prestigious Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) status, solidifying its well-deserved reputation as one of France's top sparkling wines. Today, as it celebrates this significant milestone, Crémant d'Alsace has established itself as a vital part of the Alsace wine region, renowned for its exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and unique flavor profile.

A Legacy of Quality

Crémant d'Alsace's journey from a local delicacy to an internationally acclaimed sparkling wine is nothing short of remarkable. With a meticulous production process akin to that of Champagne, it has rapidly garnered attention from wine enthusiasts across the globe. This bubbly beverage constitutes four out of every ten bottles of AOC wine produced in Alsace, showcasing its dominance and appeal within the region.

In fact, Crémant d'Alsace leads the French AOC Crémant category, commanding a substantial one-third of the worldwide market share—a clear testament to its increasing popularity far beyond the borders of France. Competitors like Crémant de Loire and Crémant de Bourgogne follow, but none can yet rival the prominence achieved by Crémant d'Alsace.

Growing International Recognition

The United States has become a key market for Crémant d'Alsace, now ranking as the third-largest export destination by value. In the period from July 2025 to June 2026 alone, the U.S. imported an impressive 1.291 million bottles, highlighting the growing interest in this delightful sparkling wine.

Evolving Tastes and Innovations

While the classic Crémant d'Alsace Brut remains a favorite, the category is undergoing a refreshing evolution. Producers are increasingly focusing on premium offerings. This includes single-varietal cuvées, particularly those made entirely from Chardonnay—an exception within crémant production.

Additionally, notable trends such as longer ageing on the lees and vintage-dated bottlings are gaining traction. The introduction of elegant rosé Crémants d'Alsace—now making up 13% of the production—reflects a shift in consumer preferences, alongside the growth of Extra Brut and Brut Nature categories.

Matthew Kaner of Will Travel For Wine describes Crémant d'Alsace as “the ultimate insider's choice—textured, intriguing, and endlessly versatile.” He states, “I dare you to find a region producing sparkling wine of this quality with a better value than Alsace.”
