Georgia Power's Historic Solar Procurement

Georgia Power, a leading electric utility in the United States, has recently achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey. The utility has awarded its final contracts in what is now recognized as the largest set of distributed generation (DG) solar power purchase agreements in the company's history. On March 24, 2026, the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) approved 16 new contracts that will add a total of 70 megawatts (MW) of third-party solar capacity. This follows an impressive integration of 41 MW from 12 contracts that had previously been authorized during the 2024 solar procurement process. Cumulatively, this adds up to over 110 MW of new solar energy contributing to Georgia's electrical grid, a remarkable feat that underscores the commitment of Georgia Power to bolster clean, renewable energy.

Anderson stated, “This milestone highlights how distributed generation solar is enabling us to provide clean and reliable energy for our customers, through effective long-term planning with the Georgia PSC.” This investment in solar power not only addresses immediate energy needs but also reinforces the state's energy infrastructure.

Georgia Power's distributed generation RFPs play a crucial role in attracting solar developers, offering them the chance to secure long-term power purchase agreements for projects that range from 250 kilowatts (kW) to 6 MW. This strategic approach not only supports sustainable energy development but also ensures that customers benefit from more affordable and dependable energy.

Moreover, Georgia Power’s collaboration with third-party developers allows the utility to purchase 100% of the renewable energy produced, making strides toward a greener energy future while ensuring that the company can adapt to market conditions. These moves are part of Georgia Power's broader mission to deliver cost-effective, carbon-free energy to millions of residents across Georgia.

As part of its ongoing growth strategy, Georgia Power anticipates aiming for an additional 100 MW of solar distributed generation within the next couple of years. As approved in the 2025 Integrated Resource Plan, two new RFPs targeting 50 MW each will be opened for bidding in 2026 and 2027, with plans for these projects to be operational by 2028.

Georgia has established itself as a leader in responsible solar development, frequently ranking among the top 10 states in solar energy growth. Georgia Power has expanded its voluntary solar portfolio significantly over the years, showcasing a balanced approach to clean energy expansion without compromising reliability or causing additional costs for customers. Currently, Georgia Power boasts more than 4,900 MW of renewable resources, with plans to reach a total of 10,000 MW by 2032.

One of its notable programs, Simple Solar, provides customers the opportunity to contribute a little extra to support solar energy initiatives, while the community solar program allows individuals to subscribe to local solar energy facilities.
