ChemDAQ Launches Innovative Personal Sampler for PAA Monitoring in Food Processing

ChemDAQ Introduces SafeCide Personal Sampler for Enhanced Safety in Food Processing

In a significant stride towards improving workplace safety for the food and beverage processing industry, ChemDAQ has unveiled its latest innovation: the SafeCide™ Personal Sampler (SPS). This cutting-edge device provides continuous, real-time monitoring of peracetic acid (PAA) exposure, a crucial chemical used in pathogen control.

As a leader in hazardous gas detection technology, ChemDAQ understands the need for effective monitoring solutions in environments where disinfectants are actively employed. Given the essential role of PAA in preventing foodborne illnesses, it’s paramount that processors not only utilize these chemicals but also protect their workers from potential overexposure. The traditional methods of reliance on periodic checks have become outdated in dynamic processing settings; thus, the SPS aims to facilitate a proactive risk management strategy by delivering immediate visibility into hazardous chemical vapors.

Features of the SafeCide Personal Sampler

The SafeCide Personal Sampler is designed for ease of use and flexibility. This battery-powered device can be worn on a belt or held manually, making it ideal for different operational scenarios. It functions by utilizing ChemDAQ’s proven E-Cell® Sensor for reliable real-time exposure measurements and seamlessly integrates with the broader SafeCide Monitoring System already in use across various facilities.

At the heart of the SPS is an innovative micro-diaphragm pump. This pump draws air samples from locations chosen by the operator, analyzes the samples, and transmits the data to a portable monitor equipped with proprietary SafeCide software. This software not only logs data but also provides instant readings for actionable insights. After the samples are analyzed, they are passed through a specially designed PAA-scrubbing filter before the filtered air is safely vented back into the environment.

The device allows operators to switch rapidly between different sampling inlets, including a lapel-clip for personal breathing-zone monitoring and a retractable 36-inch remote-sampling inlet wand. Both inlets provide direct and instantaneous access to PAA concentrations, displaying real-time data and calculated time-weighted averages.

Enhanced User Experience

ChemDAQ’s commitment to user safety and convenience is evident in the SPS’s design. Users receive vital information regarding the device's internal status through visible indicators and audible alarms, which communicate battery life and airway integrity. This feature guarantees consistent performance, protecting the operator and fostering a safe working environment.

Alex Hiliker, ChemDAQ's Executive Vice President, expressed the company's commitment to innovation in occupational safety. “Our customers trust ChemDAQ technology daily to shield their teams from PAA overexposure, a critical element in safeguarding consumers against foodborne illnesses. The introduction of the personal sampling system marks a major advancement in occupational exposure monitoring,” he stated.

Hiliker also highlighted the wider implications of implementing such technology, noting that it not only enhances safety but also leads to improved planning, strategic investments, and reduced risks of downtime associated with exposure incidents.

As part of ChemDAQ's ongoing efforts in the realm of chemical safety, additional SPS models targeting hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and ethylene oxide (EtO) are set to launch later this year. The company is poised to remain at the forefront of monitoring solutions aimed at ensuring safer workplace environments.
