ASURA Enhances Local Events with Innovative Solutions

In February 2026, ASURA, a design collective formed by students from Kurume Institute of Technology, played a pivotal role in elevating two significant local events, the 'Yasobikata Daisakusen' and the 'Jojima Sake Brewery Open House.' With an estimated attendance of over 100,000 for the sake festival, ASURA's contributions were both practical and creative, receiving commendations from event-goers and local residents alike.

Student-Created Play Areas

The Yasobikata Daisakusen and the accompanying 'Hina Doll Tour' were held from February 10 to 12 in Ukiha City. ASURA utilized the unused space of the Shirakabe Exchange Plaza by setting up play areas for children, which included slides and opportunities for craftwork, such as kaleidoscope-making and simple snacks. This initiative was in response to community feedback about the lack of safe play spaces for toddlers and children. Coupled with performances from the university's brass band, the area became a lively hub for families, enhancing their overall experience at the festival.

Comfort at the Jojima Sake Brewery

ASURA's involvement didn’t stop there; they also contributed significantly to the 32nd Jojima Sake Brewery Open House held on February 14 and 15. Known for being Kyushu’s largest sake festival, the event attracts around 100,000 attendees, often leading to congested spaces with too few seating areas. To address this challenge, ASURA introduced a pre-bookable paid respite area featuring tents, tables, chairs, and even pot heaters for warming meals. This year, they further enhanced the experience by adding traditional kotatsu seating, utilizing bamboo from neglected forests in a sustainable manner to create a unique environment. The endeavor not only received positive feedback in surveys but showcased the students' ability to blend tradition with comfort.

Professional Growth through Community Engagement

Professor Narita, mentor of ASURA, emphasized the educational benefits these projects offer students. Participation in these events coincides with a demanding period of exams and graduation research, presenting challenges that refine their time management capabilities and prepare them for future social responsibilities.
