American Lung Association's Turquoise Takeover
From May 5 to 11, 2025, the American Lung Association is launching a special initiative known as the Turquoise Takeover, shining a spotlight on lung cancer awareness. This annual event, part of the LUNG FORCE campaign, unites communities nationwide to recognize the challenges faced by lung cancer patients and advocates for actions that save lives.
A Nationwide Movement
The Turquoise Takeover is characterized by landmark buildings and monuments across the United States illuminated in turquoise, the campaign's signature color. Iconic sites like New York's One World Trade Center, Chicago's Willis Tower, and Los Angeles’ Beverly Center will all participate, symbolizing a collective commitment to tackling lung cancer.
This year's event is more important than ever. Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., with someone diagnosed every two minutes. However, significant strides have been made: advancements in early detection and treatment have resulted in a 44% improvement in the five-year survival rate over the past decade. More than 65 new therapies have been approved since 2016, providing hope to patients and their families.
Greater Awareness and Action
Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, emphasizes the need for continued progress, stating, “We are making incredible strides in lung cancer awareness and research, but there is still much work to do.” Through education, advocacy, and funding for research, the LUNG FORCE initiative has raised over $32 million since its inception in 2014, boosting research commitments significantly.
In addition to raising awareness, the Turquoise Takeover encourages individuals and organizations to support lung cancer efforts by:
- - Participating in local LUNG FORCE walks or creating DIY fundraisers.
- - Undergoing lung cancer screenings if they meet eligibility criteria.
- - Testing their homes for radon, a known carcinogen.
- - Engaging with new educational materials regarding lung cancer.
- - Donating funds to support ongoing research and advocacy initiatives.
Saved By The Scan Campaign
One of the key components in the fight against lung cancer is the Saved By The Scan campaign, aimed at determining individuals' risks for lung cancer. By visiting SavedByTheScan.org, people can take a risk assessment quiz that helps identify those at higher risk based on factors such as smoking history, exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, and air pollution. Since 2017, this initiative has informed over 1.4 million individuals about their risk levels, reinforcing the need for awareness and action.
Join the Movement
The American Lung Association encourages everyone to participate in the Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week.
