Boardwalk REIT's Commitment to Sustainability in 2025
On May 20, 2026, Boardwalk Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX: BEI.UN) proudly announced the release of its seventh annual Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report. This comprehensive document details the Trust's initiatives and accomplishments for the year 2025, marking an important milestone in its sustainability journey.
Significant Achievements in 2025
Among the noteworthy highlights from the report, Boardwalk managed a substantial
20% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, alongside a
14% decrease in overall energy consumption and a
7.6% reduction in water use intensity since 2019. These metrics reflect Boardwalk’s unwavering commitment to reducing its environmental impact and embracing sustainability across its operations.
Furthermore, Boardwalk executed its first solar photovoltaic installation at one of its properties in Edmonton, Alberta, signaling the company's transition to renewable energy sources. The Trust also invested
$16.4 million in energy-efficient upgrades to enhance its properties’ performance and sustainability.
Enhancements in Resource Management
To improve resource management, Boardwalk expanded its water and thermal submetering initiatives. Currently,
28.8% of total suites are directly metered or submetered for water, while
25.7% have natural gas submetering. This strategic move aims to provide residents with greater awareness and control over their utility usage, ultimately fostering a culture of responsible resource management.
In terms of community engagement, Boardwalk recorded a remarkable
Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 82 from its residents, and a score of
76 for Associates. This data underscores the Trust's strong relationship with its community members and its dedication to enhancing tenant satisfaction.
Boardwalk also demonstrated its commitment to giving back, with over
$274,000 allocated to charitable donations and scholarships, a testament to its ethos of community support and responsibility.
Recognition and Future Directions
The Trust's performance across various benchmarks, including GRESB, improved significantly in 2025, illustrating its dedication to meeting and exceeding industry standards in sustainability practices. A pilot climate scenario analysis was conducted on ten properties, paving the way for future climate resilience strategies in property management.
Sam Kolias, CEO and Chairman of Boardwalk, expressed pride in the Trust’s accomplishments, stating, “Our commitment to ESG continues to be grounded in purpose, care, and responsibility. By reducing friction across our operations and experiences, we are creating communities that are more connected, resilient, and designed for the future.” He emphasized that the ESG report is a reflection of progress made and priorities that will guide Boardwalk forward.
