PowerX and Montenegro's EPCG Forge Strategic Alliance for Energy Storage Development
PowerX Partners with EPCG for Energy Storage Solutions
In a significant step towards enhancing renewable energy capabilities, PowerX, Inc., headquartered in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Elektroprivreda Crne Gore AD Nikšić (EPCG), the national electricity utility of Montenegro. This partnership aims to develop Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to facilitate the country's energy transition and modernization of its power grid.
The Vision Behind the MOU
On May 7th, 2026, the MOU sets an ambitious target of achieving approximately 500 MWh of energy storage capacity within the next three years. This initiative is crucial for enabling the large-scale integration of renewable energy resources while strengthening grid stability in Montenegro. Following the adoption of its National Energy and Climate Plan in December 2025, Montenegro has committed to achieving a minimum 50% share of renewable energy in its overall energy consumption by 2030.
EPCG serves as the primary electricity provider in Montenegro, generating a significant portion of the nation’s energy through various sources, including hydropower, thermal energy, and an expanding portfolio of renewable projects. As part of its modernization strategy, EPCG recognizes BESS as a key component in enhancing the reliability and efficiency of the grid.
Cooperative Efforts for Modernization
The MOU outlines a collaborative framework through which PowerX and EPCG will work together to pinpoint optimal deployment strategies for battery energy storage. This partnership is also set to provide comprehensive after-sales support, ensuring that the energy storage systems will function effectively to meet the grid's demands. Furthermore, PowerX is keen on exploring the establishment of local battery assembly capabilities in Montenegro, thus aiding in job creation and technology transfer.
Strategic Importance of Montenegro
Montenegro's strategic position as a candidate for European Union membership, combined with its power interconnections to Italy, positions the country as a potential hub for clean energy infrastructure in Europe. PowerX aims to leverage this strategic MOU as a foundation for expanding its BESS market presence throughout Europe, capitalizing on the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions.
Empowering Renewable Energy Integration
Masahiro Ito, CEO of PowerX, expressed his enthusiasm for this cooperation, stating, "Battery energy storage systems are becoming an integral part of modern energy infrastructure, enabling better integration of renewable energy while supporting grid stability, flexibility, and resilience. Through this partnership with EPCG, we aim to assist Montenegro in its energy transition and contribute to the modernization of its power system."
Zdravko Dragaš, the CEO of EPCG, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in confirming EPCG's commitment to an energy transition that prioritizes innovation and sustainability. He highlighted that collaboration with PowerX would provide access to advanced energy storage technologies that are critical for the stable incorporation of renewable energy sources into the grid.
