ARC'TERYX Launches First World-Class Climbing Route in China at Shegeng Cave

ARC'TERYX Launches First World-Class Climbing Route in China at Shegeng Cave

In a groundbreaking ceremony, ARC'TERYX unveiled China's first officially recognized 5.15b climbing route, known as EL GRAN CABRÓN, set beneath the majestic limestone cliffs of Shegeng Cave. This remarkable launch indicates a significant leap for the climbing community within China and sets a new standard for the sport, ushering in what can be described as the country's 5.15 era.

Held in Fengshan County, Guangxi Province, the event gathered over 100 climbers, including notable athletes, route developers, and enthusiastic outdoor lovers. Together, they witnessed the momentous occasion that not only showcases a peak climbing achievement but also places China firmly on the global climbing stage.

For years, the esteemed Spicy Dumpling in Yangshuo, rated at 5.14d, held its ground as the most challenging outdoor route in China. That was until December 2024, when ARC'TERYX athlete Pan Yufei ascended Spicy Dumpling, marking a significant achievement. This event highlighted the growing caliber of climbing talent in China and demonstrated an increasing demand for more challenging routes. Now, EL GRAN CABRÓN arrives to meet that need.

A New Era for Chinese Climbing

More than just an exhilarating climb, EL GRAN CABRÓN is a pivotal moment for the domestic climbing scene. It offers local climbers an opportunity to push their boundaries and engage in high-caliber climbing experiences without needing to travel abroad. This newly launched route not only empowers climbers to reach new heights but enhances the entire perception of outdoor climbing in China.

The introduction of EL GRAN CABRÓN is part of ARC'TERYX's visionary World-Class Climbing Site Plan, initiated in 2024, aiming to elevate the prominence of Chinese climbing within a global context. The selection of Shegeng Cave, located in the stunning Leye-Fengshan Geopark, resulted from a combination of its breathtaking natural landscapes and ideal climbing potential.

Over the past year, a collaborative team consisting of six leading Chinese climbers and nine expert European route developers established more than 110 climbing routes within the cave, catering to climbers of all skill levels—from the accessible beginner climbs rated at 5.10 to more elite challenges exceeding 5.12, culminating with the impressive 5.15b route.

As part of the ceremony, ARC'TERYX showcased a documentary titled "The Shegeng Era," which chronicles the evolution of outdoor climbing in China. It highlights the journey from the original pioneers in Yangshuo to emerging climbers who are redefining the sport's boundaries.

French professional climber Sébastien Bouin, the first to successfully conquer EL GRAN CABRÓN, shares his experience in the documentary, stating, "I came here in order to find something hard and beautiful... China's potential is huge for hard climbing." His words exemplify the high expectations and excitement surrounding the growth of climbing in the nation.

Community-Driven Achievement

Shegeng not only stands as a testament to individual talent but a government-backed community-driven project. More than 50 climbing volunteers dedicated their time to clean and prepare Shegeng Cave for its grand opening, embodying a spirit of inclusion that defines the climbing community. The project isn't just significant for elite climbers; it's a shared achievement reflecting the collective efforts of the people involved in this journey towards excellence.

During the launch celebrate, participants were encouraged to engage in route maintenance and preservation activities, reinforcing the commitment towards sustainable climbing practices while ensuring the longevity of this premier site. As Shegeng emerges onto the global climbing map, ARC'TERYX has plans to develop further world-class climbing locations throughout China.

The introduction of EL GRAN CABRÓN signifies not just the changing tides in Chinese climbing culture, but a bright and collaborative future propelled by community and international synergy. The focus now shifts towards expanding opportunities that empower climbers and enrich China’s contribution to the global climbing landscape.
