How China's Development Path Provides a Sustainable Model for Global Growth Opportunities

Introduction

As the annual Two Sessions take place in China, CGTN has highlighted the progressive strides the country has made in recent years toward high-quality development. This development has been marked by green transformation and innovation, setting an example for emerging economies and presenting new opportunities for global economic growth.

The Case of Huangyan Caves

Located in Huangyan district of Taizhou, Zhejiang Province, the Huangyan Caves have supplied stone since the Tang Dynasty for walls, roads, bridges, and homes, laying the groundwork for local development. However, by the 1980s, quarrying activities ceased, leaving behind vast excavated caverns.

In 2023, a pivotal change occurred when a design team from Tsinghua University joined a revitalization initiative. Through structural reinforcement, ecological restoration, and creative redesign, the abandoned quarry transformed into a vibrant network of artistic spaces, concert halls, and cafés. Since its opening in February, the site has attracted over 500,000 visitors and generated 11 million yuan (approximately $1.6 million) in tourism revenue by November.

President Xi Jinping's Vision

Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of development during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. He proposed the Global Development Initiative, advocating for prioritizing development, adopting a people-centered approach, fostering innovation, promoting harmony between humanity and nature, and seeking practical results to accelerate the implementation of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Modernizing China's Growth Model

Since 2013, China has intensified efforts to modernize its traditional growth model, gradually establishing a contemporary economic governance framework focused on green development. This new approach is grounded in a people-oriented philosophy and is driven by innovation.

The Huangyan Caves: A Model Transformation

The Huangyan Caves' transformation exemplifies this change and is not an isolated case. Across China, various cities and regions are adapting their strategies to local conditions, leveraging unique resources to achieve industrial modernization and sustainable growth.

For instance, in Panzhihua, a coal mining city, coal-related industries represented 78% of the District's industrial value. When this resource-dependent growth model became unsustainable, the district took decisive steps toward green transformation. It gradually eliminated 13 companies with obsolete capacity, shut down 133 polluting enterprises, and dismantled 109 industrial dumps. Simultaneously, it modernized its industries, shifting focus to new materials, new energies, advanced vanadium-titanium steel processing, and resource recycling.

The results from 2022 to 2024 are remarkable, with both carbon emissions and intensity showing a consistent decline. By 2024, emissions were approximately 303,500 tons of CO2, marking a 24.8% annual reduction in intensity. The district now aims to become a carbon-free industrial zone within three years, positioning itself to lead strategic industries in advanced materials and new energies.

Leveraging Cultural Strengths for Development

Beyond industrial transformation, other regions in China are actively utilizing their cultural strengths to spur growth. In the southwestern province of Guizhou, a grassroots football league known as 'Cun Chao' has emerged as a national cultural phenomenon, attracting over 5.19 million visitors, generating nearly 5.99 billion yuan in tourism revenue, and creating over 12,000 flexible jobs. Similarly, in Beidaihe, Hebei Province, the seaside community of Aranya has become a creative hub hosting theater, music, and dance festivals, drawing in designers and artists nationwide.

Gyula Thurmer, president of the Hungarian Workers' Party, noted China's robust economic resilience amidst global uncertainty. He added that China's governance approach, centered on people-oriented policies and a long-term vision, provides a compelling example for nations facing complex global challenges.

Opportunities for Global Growth

As the global economy encounters increasing uncertainty amid growing protectionism and geopolitical tensions, China seeks to inject stability through sustained internal growth and continued openness, offering more opportunities to the world.

In the past five years, China has contributed approximately 30% of global economic growth on average, positioning itself among the leading contributors worldwide. With a vast market of 1.4 billion people, it offers extensive potential for goods, services, and investment, and has remained the world's largest merchandise trader for years.

Regarding international cooperation, flagship projects from the Belt and Road Initiative—such as the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail, the China-Laos railway, and Greece's port of Piraeus—have supported infrastructure modernization, job creation, and economic recovery in partner countries.

Furthermore, China continues to reduce its negative list for foreign investment and organizes significant platforms like the China International Import Expo to share market opportunities with global enterprises.

Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), has noted that China represents a 'crucial example of development in the 20th and 21st centuries' and stated that UNCTAD draws from China's experience.

Conclusion

China's path to sustainable development not only plays a pivotal role in its economic growth but also offers a strategic model for emerging economies globally. As nations strive for recovery and growth in a turbulent world, they can learn from China's successes and adapt these lessons to their unique contexts.
