Exploring New Coexistence with Pets for Seniors
ANIMANECT, a company dedicated to supporting seniors who wish to adopt rescue pets, is set to make its debut at the "Inu Neko Adoption Event" on May 11, 2025. This event, held at Akasaka Square in front of TBS, is organized by the Tokyo Sannō Lions Club and will feature an array of activities in collaboration with the animal protection organization NPO Nyaido Heart.
This exciting event aims to bridge the gap between seniors and their desire to adopt pets, with highlights including a pet interaction session with rescue dogs, merchandise from Tsukinoko Hokkaido, and a free consultation service provided by ANIMANECT. The goal is to create a safe environment where seniors can comfortably engage with and seek advice about animal companionship.
Addressing a Growing Need for Senior Pet Adoption
In Japan, the desire among seniors to live with pets is increasing; however, many often face adoption rejections due to their age. Various rescue organizations are understandably cautious about potential pet neglect or abandonment by older adopters, leading to restrictions on those over 60 adopting shelter animals. Despite this, there are an estimated 2.82 million people in their 60s and 70s hoping to welcome a pet into their homes. This disconnect poses a significant social issue—individuals want to adopt yet face barriers to doing so.
To address these challenges, ANIMANECT is actively collaborating with animal welfare organizations and veterinary clinics to implement a system of shared end-of-life care responsibilities, allowing seniors to adopt rescue pets confidently. The participation in the upcoming event aims to foster new connections between seniors and animals in need, rekindling hope for older individuals feeling discouraged about pet companionship.
