Panasonic Reports Early Surge in Air Conditioning Use Amid Rising Electricity Costs

Early Surge in Air Conditioning Usage in 2026

As we step into the summer of 2026, Panasonic has reported an alarming increase in air conditioning usage, reaching 20.5% as of May 17. This marks the first time this season when usage has surpassed the 20% threshold. Data collected shows that regions like Kumamoto, Saga, and Kagoshima lead the nation in air conditioning usage.

The average usage rate indicates that many households are turning to air conditioning earlier than usual, driven by unexpectedly hot weather. In fact, this early trend reveals a broader concern as rising energy prices are prompting many households to consider limiting their air conditioning usage to save on costs. According to surveys, 82% of respondents reported feeling the effects of increased electricity prices, and 89% expressed anxiety about rising costs across various necessities.

Awareness of Electricity Cost and Its Implications

The May electricity bills reflect the impact of the cessation of government subsidies and the increasing renewable energy surcharge that affects all major electricity providers, leading to a noticeable rise in costs. With summer heat prompting a surge in emergency room visits due to heatstroke, there is a delicate balance between conserving energy and ensuring personal safety.

In addition to the immediate health concerns, Panasonic has announced a survey revealing that 46% of participants wish to limit their air conditioning use to save energy this summer. Moreover, 77% expressed a desire to adopt energy-saving habits. The challenge lies in balancing comfort with cost amidst an impending hot season that is anticipated to impact energy consumption significantly.

The Regional Breakdown of Air Conditioning Usage

Analyzing the air conditioning utilization data by region, it is clear that the southern parts of Japan, particularly Kyushu, have registered much higher usage rates than the national average. This trend aligns with the higher temperature readings that have been consistent in those areas. On the other hand, regions including Kanto and Kansai are also seeing notable usage, even as some households express hesitation in using air conditioning in May, with 66% feeling uneasy about turning it on this early in the season.

Interestingly, the survey results indicate that the average temperature at which people start using air conditioning is around 25°C, illustrating a tendency to wait until conditions become uncomfortable before activating their systems.

Energy Saving Strategies for Early Summer

To aid consumers in navigating the complicated dynamics of cooling and energy costs, Panasonic's Air Meister has developed practical energy-saving techniques that align with the current needs. One notable recommendation is to utilize the air conditioner's
