This analysis draws from data provided by over 1,200 private foundations, showcasing how philanthropic efforts are evolving to meet pressing societal needs.

Key Findings from the Report

The 2026 Report on Private Philanthropy delivers an in-depth look at the trends surrounding philanthropic giving and investment within private foundations. Key findings illustrate that:

1. Increase in Charitable Contributions: The analyzed foundations collectively granted 40,210, amounting to $1.14 billion—an increase of 5.3% in the number of grants and 15.1% in grant dollars from 2024. Notably, larger foundations significantly contributed to this increase, showing a remarkable 22.6% growth in grant dollars.

2. Distributions Exceeding Required Minimum: On average, foundations distributed 7.1% of their assets in 2024 and 2025, well above the required 5% minimum distribution. Smaller foundations, particularly those with assets between $1 million to $10 million, led the way by distributing nearly 9.9% of their assets annually.

3. Areas of Focus: Among various sectors, education garnered the lion's share of funding, capturing 19.0% of total grants, closely followed by public/societal benefits at 16.5% and human services at 13.7%. Paradoxically, while human services received the most grants (7,785), the health sector experienced the most substantial year-over-year growth in funding, jumping 2.6 percentage points to 10.2%.

4. Targeted Giving Trends: A notable trend emerged where around 60% of grants were earmarked for specific programs or initiatives, with this proportion increasing among larger foundations. In contrast, smaller foundations displayed a more balanced giving approach, allocating almost equal amounts to designated and general support.

5. Growth in Foundation Assets: The analyzed foundations reported a collective asset growth, ending 2025 with $5.7 billion, up from $5.1 billion at the close of 2024—an overall increase of approximately 11%. Notably, mid-sized foundations recorded the most robust growth, at 13.9%.

6. Diverse Investment Strategies: Investment strategies varied across different foundation sizes. Smaller foundations generally allocated 64.4% of their portfolios to equities, while larger organizations adopted a more diverse strategy with 48.9% in equities and 20.9% in alternative investments—showing stark contrasts in financial approaches between the two categories.

In conclusion, this substantial increase in charitable giving signifies not only the resilience of private foundations but also their commitment to adapt in the face of evolving societal challenges.
