Okayama University Researchers Honored for Scientific Excellence

In an inspiring recognition of their groundbreaking work, three distinguished researchers from Okayama University have been awarded the prestigious Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prizes in the field of science and technology for the year 2026. Professor Toshihiro Suga and Assistant Professor Yoshiki Nakajima from the Institute of Multidisciplinary Science, along with Associate Professor Takayuki Ishii from the Planetary Material Research Institute, received accolades for their exceptional contributions to scientific research.

The awards ceremony took place on April 15, 2026, at the Ministry of Education. The Science and Technology Award (for research) is presented annually to researchers who have achieved remarkable advancements in their fields. This year, it was awarded to 56 recipients. The work conducted by Professor Suga and his team focuses on the study of the water-splitting reaction in photosynthesis using X-ray free electron lasers. Their research paves the way for the rational design of artificial photosynthesis catalysts aimed at producing clean energy from sunlight and water. Their innovative approach was particularly celebrated and played a significant part in their recognition.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Ishii's contributions in the Young Scientist Award category reflect his impactful research on the internal structure and material circulation of the Earth through high-pressure experiments. This work not only elucidates the equilibrium relationships and crystallography of mantle minerals but also provides new insights into the behavior of water deep within the Earth, fundamentally contributing to the advancement of planetary material science. He was one of 101 young researchers awarded this significant honor.

Okayama University is actively enhancing its research capabilities, having been selected in December 2023 for the Ministry of Education’s J-PEAKS program, which focuses on strengthening regional core and distinctive research universities in Japan, implemented by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. This initiative aims to accelerate support for promising young researchers like those who received awards this year and ensure that cutting-edge research outcomes are rapidly and effectively communicated to society. The university continues to strive for excellence, encouraging the expectations for a transparent and innovative research environment.

Prof. Suga expressed his joy in receiving this recognition, highlighting that his continuous efforts over the past decade since winning the Young Scientist Award are being acknowledged. He emphasized that this achievement was only possible due to the collaboration and support of his research team and colleagues.

Assistant Professor Nakajima also shared his thoughts, noting that this research could not have been accomplished without the immense guidance and cooperation from fellow experts in various fields, as well as the hard work of his lab members. He expressed his honor in receiving such a prestigious award, reiterating his appreciation for all support received along the way.

Associate Professor Ishii added that this award signifies a culmination of his research efforts since entering academia. He extended his gratitude towards his mentors and collaborators, acknowledging that there remain many unresolved challenges in his field. The recognition acts as both a reflection on his past and a new starting point for continued research development.
