Okayama University's International Learning Program Fosters Global Collaboration and Innovation

Exploring New Horizons: OU-TACT Program at Okayama University

The Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science at Okayama University has initiated an innovative overseas learning program titled OU-TACT (Okayama University–National Taiwan Normal University Communicative Training Program for Master Students) aimed at fostering international collaboration and enhancing research capabilities among its students. The program, held from November 4 to November 14, 2025, in Taipei, Taiwan, saw the participation of ten master's students who engaged with local universities and cultural experiences to broaden their perspectives.

Established in collaboration with National Taiwan Normal University, the OU-TACT program seeks to create opportunities for students to experience diversity firsthand and cultivate international and interdisciplinary skills. This engaging program includes cultural activities, language training, and visits to research facilities within Taiwan's leading educational institutions and industries. Through these interactions, participants enriched their understanding of Taiwan's cutting-edge technologies and research while practicing practical English skills.

This year's itinerary emphasized experiential learning fully utilizing the five senses. Participants visited various esteemed locations such as the National Taiwan Normal University’s Life Science Museum, the National Taiwan University’s Geological and Botanical specimen museums, and the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) Innovation Center. These excursions allowed students to observe and physically interact with significant exhibits while learning about the history and achievements of research in these fields.

Additionally, the program included workshops hosted by the AI research lab at National Taiwan Normal University, where students learned programming concepts to create motion-activated cars that used facial and hand recognition technology. At the botany lab at National Taiwan University, students were introduced to practical biological concepts and even enjoyed fresh milk produced on campus. The interaction within these laboratories was dynamic, with students eagerly peering through microscopes and engaging in vibrant discussions.

Participants also gained practical language skills through Chinese and English courses, alongside traditional cultural experiences—such as mastering the ancient Chinese art of diabolo and visiting the National Palace Museum, while also indulging in traditional Hakka cuisine, which added excitement to their learning journey.

A significant aspect of the program was the opportunity for students to interact with local Taiwanese students, educators, and researchers from diverse backgrounds. Several instances of collaborative presentations and shared lectures facilitated the improvement of communication skills as students learned to navigate these various environments. Many participants reported personal growth, stating, “I was exposed to research areas I had little familiarity with, which broadened my horizons,” and, “I made friends outside my research group, expanding my network.”

The OU-TACT program is also connected to the project management course on long-term overseas study, allowing students to embark on significant global initiatives to foster their career advancements. Okayama University is committed to offering more avenues for students to develop their global competencies and looks forward to exciting future endeavors that support its vision as a unique research university at the regional and international levels.

Ultimately, the diverse exchange of ideas and practices experienced during the OU-TACT program paves the way for ongoing collaboration between Japan and Taiwan, contributing to shared goals in education and research. Students returned from this enlightening experience not only with new academic knowledge but also friendships and connections that transcend borders, aligning with Okayama University’s broader mission to nurture global citizens for a sustainable world.

Keep an eye out for upcoming innovative collaborations as Okayama University continues to strive for excellence in education and research, reinforcing its role as a regional hub for distinctive academic endeavors.
