Familiar Launches Gold Ribbon Campaign for Childhood Cancer Awareness
Familiar, a renowned brand from Kobe, Japan, is participating once again in the annual Gold September Campaign, an initiative for increasing awareness about childhood cancer. This initiative takes place from September 1 to September 30, coinciding with the global Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In collaboration with Waseda University's Graduate School of Business Administration and the nonprofit Cancer Network Japan, Familiar aims to promote understanding and support for childhood cancer through various activities, including showcasing its beloved character, Famichan, adorned with a gold ribbon badge at its locations in Kobe and Daikanyama.
The Gold September Campaign
The Gold September Campaign is an international movement that focuses on raising awareness and understanding of childhood cancer. Throughout September, various landmarks worldwide are illuminated in gold, symbolizing the treasured lives of children who are affected by cancer. In Japan, approximately 2,000 to 2,500 children are diagnosed with cancer each year. Thanks to advancements in medical treatment, around 80% of these children are now able to recover. Nevertheless, certain types of tumors, such as malignant brain tumors, remain challenging to treat, and about 20% of these children still face the grim reality of losing their lives.
The Role of Familiar
Familiar has been engaged in childhood cancer awareness campaigns since 2021, working closely with the Cancer Network Japan (CNJ), which strives to deliver scientifically backed information about cancer treatment and support. The collaboration was born from a mutual commitment to spread awareness about childhood cancer and build a support network for the patients and survivors. Famichan’s involvement in wearing the gold ribbon badge symbolizes the brand's dedication to this cause, supporting the message that children are precious and deserving of our collective care.

Understanding Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer refers to the various types of cancers affecting children under the age of 15. Each year in Japan, about 2,000 to 2,500 children receive this devastating diagnosis. Although advancements in medicine have dramatically increased survival rates, children who undergo treatment often face late-term complications that can impact their growth and quality of life post-treatment. As such, ongoing support is crucial for their well-being. They are not just small adults; they require specialized care and compassion.
