California State University, Los Angeles Secures $48 Million Grant

In a pivotal move for youth mental health advocacy, California State University, Los Angeles has been awarded a remarkable $48 million grant from the Ballmer Group. This funding stands as the largest philanthropic gift in the university’s history and ranks sixth in the larger California State University (CSU) system. The initiative aims to address the pressing youth mental health crisis currently facing Los Angeles schools and communities, especially in under-resourced areas.

Expanding Mental Health Services

Starting immediately, these funds will significantly deepen Cal State LA’s collaboration with K-12 districts and community organizations. The primary goal is to improve access to high-quality mental health services for children, adolescents, and families. The grant will specifically enhance the university's capacity to train more than 1,000 new social workers and family counselors, reflecting the community’s diverse needs.

Cal State LA President Berenecea Johnson Eanes expressed profound gratitude to Ballmer Group for their generous support. “This grant will change lives across Los Angeles by preparing a new generation of counselors and social workers who reflect and understand the communities they serve,” she noted. Eanes emphasized that this partnership amplifies the university’s mission to meet the critical mental health needs of children and families across the region.

Enhancing Educational Programs

The $48 million investment will lead to substantial growth in Cal State LA's Master of Social Work (MSW) and School-Based Family Counseling (SBFC) programs. The grant will allow the university to double the capacity of its one-year MSW program, increase the two-year MSW program by 50%, and also double the size of the SBFC program. This expansion is designed to produce graduates who are not only academically exceptional but also culturally responsive and dedicated to delivering public service.

According to Heather Lattimer, the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Cal State LA, the impact of these programs will resonate in schools, public agencies, and nonprofit organizations throughout Los Angeles for years to come. She stated, “By growing our extraordinary MSW and SBFC programs, we will prepare more graduates who are committed to making a difference.”

Financial Support for Students

A significant portion of the funding will be directed towards student scholarships, making it easier for graduates to pursue careers in public service—an area often hindered by financial barriers. This initiative reinforces Cal State LA's commitment to produce a diverse workforce that can effectively meet the mental health and wellness needs of the community.

Ballmer Group’s Director of Strategy, Policy, and Partnerships, Kim Pattillo Brownson, emphasized the importance of this investment in cultivating pathways into the field of mental health care, stating, “Cal State LA has a proven record of preparing diverse, community-rooted graduates who go on to make a meaningful difference.”

A Collaborative Effort

This transformative initiative is part of a broader collaboration involving Cal State LA, UCLA, and California State University, Dominguez Hills. Together, these institutions have secured a total of $110 million from Ballmer Group to enhance professional training and transition into public and nonprofit roles, addressing the growing demands for mental health services in the Los Angeles area.
