Samsung Unveils Revolutionary Flex Titanium Technology for Foldable Displays

Samsung Introduces Flex Titanium: The Next-Gen Foldable Display Technology

In a significant stride toward innovation, Samsung Electronics has revealed its latest breakthrough technology, known as 'Flex Titanium', tailored for the next generation of Samsung Galaxy foldable devices. This development marks the culmination of seven generations of advancements in foldable technology, merging structural design and materials science to bring about enhanced durability and a more refined viewing experience. The Flex Titanium technology combines a titanium alloy film and titanium plates, achieving an exceptional balance of thinness, flexibility, and strength.

Sunghoon Moon, Vice President of Mobile eXperience (MX) at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the synergy between user needs and technological capabilities. He stated, "Samsung’s strengths lie in connecting user needs with our technical prowess to deliver values that can be experienced in daily life. The next-gen Samsung Galaxy foldable products incorporate innovative display technology that enhances user experience centered around excellent viewing."

Evolution Based on Years of Foldable Experience

Since the popularization of AMOLED displays in 2007, Samsung has continuously provided revolutionary mobile display technologies that cater to the flexible form factor's evolution. The true value of such innovations becomes evident through continuous improvements guided by real use-case scenarios. The field of foldable devices is no exception; through the development of seven generations of Samsung Galaxy foldable products, the company has committed to listening attentively to user feedback. This commitment has led to two critical insights: the necessity for an immersive viewing experience on larger screens and the importance of minimizing visible creases without compromising durability and portability.

In response to these insights, Samsung has combined innovations in technology, materials, and mechanical engineering to further enhance the very structure of foldable displays, leading to its novel 'Flex Titanium' technology. By evolving both display technology and device design, Samsung aims to maintain a leading role in the mobile industry, providing users with an unparalleled experience.

Flex Titanium: A Leap into Next-Gen Viewing Experiences

To cater to the dual demands of durability and immersive viewing experiences, Samsung has adopted a fresh approach to display structural design. The goal was to achieve three key elements: strength to withstand external impacts, flexibility to endure repeated folding, and thinness for an elegant appearance. Titanium emerged as the material of choice due to its superior strength and durability, evidenced by its use in harsh environmental applications like satellite antennas and Mars rover wheels. However, its rigidity presents challenges in applications that require thinness and flexibility, such as foldable displays, demanding high technical expertise.

Samsung has innovatively developed two main components using titanium: the 'titanium alloy film' and the 'titanium plate'. The titanium alloy film resides beneath the OLED panel, supporting the display from within. It boasts twenty times the mechanical strength compared to traditional polymer films, crafted to an ultra-thin profile that is about a third the thickness of a human hair through precise roll-processing techniques. Below it lies a sturdy titanium plate, structured as a flexible component that supports the display module. Advanced hole-processing technology ensures an air-free structure between the module and adhesive, creating a more robust unified design. Thus, when the screen is opened, it remains stable while gracefully accommodating repeated folds.

Additionally, by integrating a high-resolution architecture with next-gen organic materials, Samsung has achieved ultra-high display resolution while reducing power consumption, significantly enhancing overall power efficiency.

Kyung-Jin Yoo, Vice President of Samsung Display's Mobile Display Product Development Team, noted, "By applying precision micro-patterned holes on the crease areas of the titanium plates, we have succeeded in balancing flexibility with exceptional durability. This combination of high-resolution display structure and new materials aims to further enhance the competitiveness of the next-gen Samsung Galaxy foldable products."

With these enhancements, a strikingly high strength is maintained while minimizing visible creases on screens, maximizing viewer immersion, and achieving a new standard for foldable displays through superior strength, flexibility, and structural stability.

The advanced 'Flex Titanium' technology will debut in Samsung's next-generation Galaxy foldable devices, with more details to be unveiled during the Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, 2026.

Galaxy Unpacked will be live-streamed on the official Samsung Japan website (with Japanese subtitles) and on the Samsung Japan official YouTube channel at 22:00 JST on July 22, 2026.
