Bolt Graphics Unveils Zeus Test Chip and New Taipei Office for Next-Gen GPU Production

Bolt Graphics Unveils Zeus Test Chip and New Taipei Office

In a significant announcement, Bolt Graphics, Inc. has successfully brought up its Zeus test chip, marking a pivotal moment in the realm of high-performance computing (HPC). This announcement was accompanied by the opening of a new office in Taipei, designed to bolster the company's production capabilities as it further develops its innovative graphics processing unit (GPU). The venture signifies Bolt's commitment to spearheading advancements in technology and positions the company for enhanced operational efficiency in the competitive semiconductor industry.

A Leap Forward in GPU Technology

The Zeus test chip, crafted using a 12nm technology from TSMC, is tailored to execute complex physical algorithms vital for simulation and rendering workloads. This new architecture is specifically designed to overcome historical limitations faced by traditional CPU and GPU platforms, which struggled to simulate complete products. By integrating dedicated electromagnetic simulation hardware, Zeus presents a robust solution for addressing performance, accuracy, and memory challenges that have hindered product development.

Darwesh Singh, the Founder and CEO of Bolt Graphics, highlighted the significance of this advancement, stating, "For years, engineers have had to choose between simulating individual components or building a physical prototype of complete products. Running Maxwell's equations on our silicon eliminates that tradeoff." The next-generation GPU is not only expected to excel in electromagnetic simulations, but also aims to enhance computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and molecular dynamics, enabling engineers to simulate and render complex parts with unprecedented accuracy.

Quick Success with the Test Chip

Remarkably, the Zeus test chip was operational within just 24 hours, passing all operational tests across a temperature range of -40 C to 85 C with no functional issues reported. At 1.4 watts, the 6 sq mm chip operates at a power efficiency that significantly outperforms its predecessor, which consumed 35 watts. This impressive prototype gives confidence to the internal team by validating performance and efficiency estimations initially anticipated.

To celebrate this achievement, Bolt hosted an event at its Sunnyvale headquarters, inviting key stakeholders and contributors to witness the milestone first-hand.

Expanding Presence in Taipei

The establishment of the Taipei office signals Bolt's strategic move to enhance its relationships with manufacturing partners and suppliers. Located at Nanshan Plaza, this new office will facilitate closer collaboration as Bolt prepares for the large-scale production of its flagship Zeus GPU. With a team already in place and plans for rapid growth, the Taiwanese office is poised to play a critical role in the logistics of manufacturing operations.

Lawrence Lee, the VP of Manufacturing Operations, remarked, "Building production silicon requires close coordination with our partners. Having our team in Taipei puts us beside our key suppliers, allowing us to keep a pulse on progress and move faster, while ensuring quality throughout development."

Bolt has strategically selected TSMC's N5P process node as part of their production strategy to effectively manage wafer allocations and avoid competition within the industry. The company anticipates opening developer access in the first quarter of 2027, with initial availability for early access program customers targeted for late 2027.

Intensifying its focus on technology advancement and production readiness, Bolt aims to ramp up volume production of PCIe cards and servers by 2028. As the anticipation among customers grows, the collaborative efforts in Taipei will be crucial in fulfilling demand and expectations.
