Runners with Diabetes Unite at the 2025 NYC Marathon
In a heartfelt initiative, Beyond Type 1, a global nonprofit organization that champions people affected by diabetes, is preparing for its participation in the upcoming TCS New York City Marathon. Scheduled for November 2, 2025, this year's event will feature an inspiring team of over 50 runners, all of whom are either living with diabetes or are caregivers. This marks the eighth year of the Beyond Type Run team, and it’s especially significant as it coincides with the organization's 10th anniversary.
The initiative aims to raise awareness about diabetes while also generating critical funds for Beyond Type 1's mission. This year's contingent comprises a diverse group of participants, including first-time marathon runners and experienced athletes from across the globe. Each member carries their unique story but they are all united by a common goal: to demonstrate that living with diabetes does not limit one’s potential.
Running a marathon while managing diabetes presents unique challenges, including blood sugar control and proper fueling. However, each runner sees these obstacles as a testament to their strength. Since its inception in 2017, Beyond Type Run has involved over 200 participants living with type 1 diabetes, and in 2023, the team expanded to include those with type 2 diabetes and their caregivers as well.
Deborah Dugan, the CEO of Beyond Type 1, emphasized the importance of this event:
“This year marks Beyond Type 1’s 10th anniversary, a decade of redefining what’s possible for people living with diabetes. Our 2025 Beyond Type Run team is running for every person impacted by diabetes, pushing past barriers and showing the world that life with this illness has no limits.”
The team this year will be led by Phil Southerland, the CEO of Team Novo Nordisk, who brings invaluable experience and passion to the group. He is dedicated to highlighting the resilience of the diabetes community. Their fundraising goal is to reach $1 million, which will directly support various initiatives and programs aimed at improving the lives of people impacted by diabetes.
With approximately 589 million adults affected by diabetes worldwide, including over 38 million in the United States alone, the need for support, understanding, and community has never been more pressing. Each runner in the Beyond Type Run team pledges to raise at least $5,000, contributing to Beyond Type 1's array of programs designed to provide education, resources, connection, and direct assistance to those in need.
Being affiliated with the New York Road Runners Official Charity Partner Program gives Beyond Type 1 guaranteed marathon entries for their fundraising athletes, which allows them to utilize this iconic event to increase their outreach and support.
Support for the Beyond Type Run team comes from incredible sponsors, including Dexcom, Medtronic Diabetes, and Novo Nordisk. To lend your support and help these remarkable athletes reach their goal, consider visiting
